Rachelle Alexander: Maryland's Newest Terapin

American Heritage senior Rachelle Alexander received the scholarship letters, but the whole process had her confused more than anything. After thinking it through and researching her options, Alexander narrowed her choices down to the University of Tennessee and the University of Maryland. She says in the end it was the Terps that won her over.

"I have a lot of family up there, the coaches were very interested and are always concerned with my progress, the school is beautiful, and there are good academics.  I plan on studying Kinesiology to become an orthopedic surgeon. Some schools don't have that program and Maryland does"

Alexander was a wrecking force for a power house American Heritage program over the past three years. On the cross country course, she finished fourth as a junior and 17th her senion year. In track she was even more dominant, leading AMH to three consecutive 4x400 meter relay titles and back to back 4x800 meter relay championships as well as runner-up showing in 2011. Individually, she finished second in the 800 in 2012 and third in 2013. She was sixth in the quarter mile her sophomore campaign. All three years American Heritage won the team championship. She says that close relationship between teammates she had in high school was something she sensed in her future team.

"I speak to the coaches frequently, asking questions about the university, and telling them what I'm currently doing as far as running is concerned. With the girls I started texting them to get myself acquainted. I love that their team is close. It reminds me of our team back at American Heritage."

The future Terapin knows for sure she will run indoor and outdoor track, but cross country season is still up in the air.  She says she will miss the coaches, teammates and the blood sweat and tears that comes with winning championships, but is looking forward to what the future holds.

"I'm looking forward to meeting new people, being a part of college life, and I can't wait to see snow. I plan to be a hard worker not a complainer. I want to be an example even as a freshman. My goal is to give everything all the time to make myself and the others around me better."
