Race Recap by Tom Connor

Coach Jim Simpson and his crew treated 50+ teams to another exceptional event at the 2013 North Port XC Invitational this Saturday. The field, which was split into Large and Small School Divisions, featured some of the state’s premier squads. From the moment Alina Hotchkiss broke into her powerful rendition of the National Anthem, there was no doubt it was going to be a great day of racing!

Tyler Bennett of Ft. Myers High School finished first in the Boys Large School Varsity event, turning in a blistering time of 15:24.9. Close behind him were six other runners with times under 16:00.0, led by Zackery Summerall of Sarasota. Estero took home the Boys Large School crown, followed by Sarasota Riverview, Sarasota, Fort Myers and HB Plant, respectively.

The Girls Large School Division also posted some impressive times with six runners finishing at less than 19:00.0. The winner, Araceli Leon of Estero High School, finished at 18:21.9. She was followed close behind by Caroline Barlow of Gulf Coast and Ft. Myers’ Emily Edwards. Not to be outdone by their Boys, the Estero Girls turned in the strongest team score.

Immokalee HS won the Boys Small School Division, led by individual winner Leonel Delacruz. Delacruz’s time of 16:20.4 was strong enough to bring him in just ahead of Bayshore High’s Canaan Meester-Ketterman. Grace Casagrande of Cardinal Mooney notched her second win in as many weeks with a time of 19:12.9, followed by Sarah Candiano from Evangelical Christian School. Candiano’s strong performance helped lead Evangelical Christian.
