In His Own Words Nick Morken - The Inside Scoop On The Runner

Hello again flrunners! Sorry it’s been awhile since my last post. Anyways, I can’t believe we are approaching Prestate already. This race signals the midpoint to the end of the season and it has flown by.

The last meet I competed in was the flrunners.com Invitational. I went in to the race pretty confident in where I was at this point in the season. I slowly moved my way up after the mile trying to cover any moves or surges by my competitors. I ended up finishing second in a PR of 15:16. After the race I knew that I had accomplished my goal. My goal since I first ran was to keep improving. It didn’t matter the time just that I kept getting faster. My season bests for each year since freshman year have been 16:38, 15:38, 15:30, and now 15:16. I credit my coach for helping me improve my times but more importantly I’m thankful to him for keeping me healthy.

Since not much has been happening, I thought I would share some background info on myself. I probably should’ve done this earlier but oh well.

How I got started in running?

Thomas Howell and I met in 7th grade and he asked me to join the track team. I sat in the Lewis Middle School gym wondering what event I should pick. My first instinct was the 100m: short race= no pain! After considering it though I chose to do the mile because I always won the time trials in elementary school and because I knew someone who was running that distance.

Favorite runner? (American)

Dyrol Burleson. Oregon’s first great recruit (1959). Former American Record Holder (PR: 3:55)

Favorite runner? (All time)

Daniel Komen. A native of Kenya, who in the mid 90’s dominated everything from the mile to 5000m. His greatest race took place during a 3000m in Rieti, Italy in 1996. His time of 7:20 broke the WR by 4 seconds and has yet to be beaten in 16 years.
