North Port Bobcat Relays: Power Outages, School Records, Thrower Relays!

On-Site Coverage

Meet Recap By Blake Riley

Thirteen teams gathered for the 8th annual Bobcat Relays at North Port High School for what is always a great meet. With very windy conditions early in the meet moving to cold and calm conditions at night, some fast times were still produced. Many great performances were put out for relay teams including the throwers 4x100m relay by Sarasota Riverview. Many meet and school records were set including the boys and girls 4x1600m (pictured below) and distance medley relays racked up by Sarasota high school.

As the night went on and a typical AWESOME track meet hosted by North Port, what could have made it better than to have the 4x400m run in the near dark? Right as the girls 4x400 was about to start to conclude the meet the lights went out and I figured they would call the meet, but I was wrong, To make things interesting the 4x400 MUST go on! With the lack of lights not affecting teams, the Lemon Bay girls took home the gold with a blazing fast 4:24 and the Venice High School boys school taking control of first with a 3:34.80.

According to Sarasota coach John Stevenson, the girls won the 4x1600 with a time of 21:48.50, breaking the school record of 22:34 as well as the meet record of 22:34  The Sarasota boys bested there 4x1600 school record of 18:48 with a time of 18:37.80, falling just short of the meet record of 18:33.

With all the records set you would have thought this was the end of the season rather than the beginning.

Big shoutout to the Sarasota boys' Zack Sumerall (pictured above) and Adam Bradtmueller for posting in some fast times to help their guys take the win along with PR's for Brandon Drumm taking control the first leg of the race with a 4:40 and Brian Kerry getting a huge PR! Sarasota girls also posted some blazing times with the combo of freshman Mackenzie Brown, Angelina grebe, Emily Harding, and Sage Lyons. Right from the start the Sota girls took control and cruised in with a school and meet record of 21:48.5 (5:27 average mile!).

Maddison Krstec of North Port and Karon Higdon from Sarasota Riverview (cover photo) were named meet MVP's. Krstec was a part of the Bobcats distance relay teams.Higdon was a part of the 4x100, 4x200, 4x100 throwers relay, and shot put.

I would also like to give a great shoutout to my team Sarasota Rverview for taking the boys title and North Port for taking the girls title and an individual shout out to Bryce Vokus, Matthew Berman, and Warran Grajalez for being great teammates and also to the RHS coaches! Thanks Todd Grasley for allowing me to do this recap. Onward to running.....!
