Running With The Bulls: Hallandale's Alvin and Lacey Off To USF

These past couple of years Hallandale High School girl’s team has shown that they can produce athletes as well as great teams. Even if that means they don’t have more than seven girls putting up points. Hallandale has been moving up and down between 2A and 3A for a couple of years now. They have sent many athletes off to D1 colleges such as Kyri Tabor (2011 and 2012 2A 400m champion) to the University of Alabama, Regine Williams (3A 2013 long jummp champion) to the University of Arkansas and Lia King to the University of Central Florida. In these past two years with a small crew of girls Hallandale has managed to finish runner- up in 2A (2014) and 3A (2013). This year the Chargers only lost the state title by one point to Bolles High School. Two seniors from this 2A state runner-up team are now going off to college together, to be teammates for the next four years. Edquisha Alvin and Tierra Lacey recently just signed to USF together and will definitely make an impact as freshmen.

Tierra Lacey was previously a hurdler, but she then made a transition to the jumps. She placed 3rd in the long jump at her district jumping 17-3.25 inches and at her region she placed 4th jumping 17-1.75 inches. At the state meet Lacey placed 13th overall, but it showed her true strength was in the triple jump. Her farthest jump this year is 38-9 inches, and she was runner up in both her district and region to her teammate Kimani Rushing; she also placed 4th at the state meet with a jump of 36-8.5 inches.

Lacey and Alvin were also very important legs on their 4x400m relay. They were runner up last year in the event, but this year they placed 4th. Edquisha Alvin on the other hand just missed her chance at hurdling at state as she placed 5th at the region, but her true talent was in the high jump. Alvin placed first in her district with what looks like easily jumping 5’4. In her region however she placed runner up with a jump of 5’6, which tied her personal best at the time. At state Alvin went to work and won the competition with a new personal best of 5’7.

Alvin and Lacey are very happy to be able to contribute to USF together.

“It feels greats to be able to move on to the next level with my teammate Tierra Lacey. I’m very excited,” said Alvin.

“It’s good knowing that I am going to be able to be alongside my ‘sister’ for a couple more years,” added Lacey. Moving on to the next level in a sport brings many different things to do the table.

I asked these young ladies what they would miss about high school track the most Tierra said, “I’m going to miss the family feel of things. Everyone supported another. The coaches always pushed me and my teammates to be better as not only athletes, but people in general. I just love my Hallandale Chargers!”

These two young ladies are going to be an immediate impact on the USF team on the jumps side as well as running. Edquisha said what she looks forward to the most about USF track is, “A great relationship with my teammates and coaches also helping my team score in big track meets moving on to the next big level such as Nationals.”

With these two young ladies leaving, it definitely means the Lady Chargers will have to have someone fill their places, as these ladies put up major points for the team. Alvin and Lacey’s coach, Coach John Battle will miss these young ladies, as he’s been with them for the past four years, and has witnessed their growth as athletes and young women.

“It is great feeling to see these two amazing individuals grow into such dynamic young ladies. Having them on the team these past few years has allowed me to become a better coach and mentor. Over the past decade of my life, I’ve coached some of the best student athletes in track and field. I hold Edquisha and Tierra in high regard,” explains Coach Battle.

As a coach, Coach Battle gets to know each of his athletes as best as possible, so he can know what type of training works for them, as well as helping them progress. Coach Battle had this to say about Edquisha and Tierra, “Tierra has a huge heart and a vast understanding on the world. She is an outstanding athlete on the track and even more incredible off. Edquisha is one of the hardest working athletes I’ve coached. She is a fighter and ill out work her opponent to win. The mindset she possesses will certainly aid in her being successful on the next level.” Their legacies at Hallandale won’t be forgotten, but will be continued. I think Edquisha and Tierra will be a great addition to the USF Lady Bulls, best of luck to both ladies.
