Fisher 24th in Long Jump at World Juniors

EUGENE, Ore. - Bethune-Cookman freshman jumper Kenneth Fisher took in competition at his first international championship event on Wednesday (July 23) at historic Hayward Field, at the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) World Junior Championships.

Representing not only Bethune-Cookman, but also Team USA, Fisher braved the cold and wet conditions for the Day 2-opening long jump qualification round. The B-CU rookie recorded a jump of 6.97m (22-10.40 ft.) to finish 24th in the opening round of the event. Only the top 12 finishers in the event advanced to the afternoon session's final.

Fisher's IAAF performance wraps up a very successful rookie campaign for the East Point, Ga. sophomore-to-be, earning Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) indoor and outdoor titles in the long jump. In addition, Fisher earned honors as First Team All-MEAC, U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-America Honorable Mention and USTFCCCA All-Academic.

In addition to the IAAF meet, Fisher earned the opportunity to compete at the NCAA Men's and Women's Outdoor Track & Field Championships, and his record-setting second place finish at the USA Track & Field (USATF) Junior Nationals garnered him berth on Team USA.

“I am extremely proud of the season Fisher has had,” Director of Track & Field and Cross Country Donald Cooper said. “It was a tough, wet and cold day, and he just couldn't get in a good rhythm. This is the best collection of young athletes in the world and he has proven that he belongs here. Coach [Tyree] Price has prepared him well all season long, and we look forward to next season.”
