Track to Host Technical Skills Camp Starting August 5

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Beginning on August 5 and running through mid-November, Bethune-Cookman track & field will be hosting a series of technical skills camps for horizontal jumpers on the B-CU campus.

Leading the camps will be Bethune-Cookman assistant coach and horizontal jumps coach Tyree Price, entering his second season on the staff for the Wildcats. During his first season with the Wildcats, Price coached La'Quan Howard (triple jump), Demetrius Rooks (long jump), Nicholas Williams (long jump) and Kenneth Fisher (long jump) to NCAA Outdoor Championships appearances. In addition, Fisher made an appearance for Team USA at the IAAF World Junior Championships last month in Oregon.

Price's jumpers provided key scoring for the Wildcats at the 2014 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Outdoor Championships, aiding B-CU to its first ever men's conference title.

Focusing on long jump and triple jump, the sessions are in a day camp format, and are open to boys and girls of all ages, ranging up to graduating high school seniors. Individualized instruction will be available for various age divisions.

“This camp will provide a solid base for jumpers to familiarize themselves with how we do things on the collegiate level and how to prepare themselves to be better when competing at the middle school and high school levels,” Price said.

Each session will aim to develop technical skills and core terminology, while teaching campers to assert themselves and learn proper positions that will help them to get better. Camp staff will teach campers to warm up properly and will provide a series of drills to teach technique and mental preparation for jumping, much like a track practice.

The first session of the camp will be on August 5th on the campus of Bethune-Cookman University, with subsequent sessions on August 7, August 12, August 14, November 8 and November 15. Participants can sign up for individual sessions or for multiple sessions. Individual sessions are $25, but combined session campers can attend all six sessions for $120.

“As summer winds down, it gives kids something they can do during the day to be active doing something that is going to benefit them and not take away from weekend activities,” Price said.

Weekday sessions in August are scheduled to run from 3:45 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. The weekend sessions in November run from 9:15 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

“Everything we're trying to do is about progress,” Price noted. “It will benefit the person most who comes in through all segments, and really gets attuned to what we're trying to do.”
