Cajuns finish second in men's race; fifth in women's

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Matthew Rice covered the men's 8K course in 25 minutes, 16.53 seconds to claim first-place and lead the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns men's cross country team to a second-place finish at the 32nd annual Florida State Cross Country Invitational on Friday at Apalachee Regional Park.
 
Ashley Irwin earned a fourth-place finish in the women's 5K race as she was of two Louisiana runners to finish in the top-10 and help the Ragin' Cajuns to a fifth-place performance.
 
Rice, a sophomore from Baton Rouge, was one of three Ragin' Cajuns runners to finish in the top 15 as Louisiana, ranked No. 14 in the South Central Region by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA), finished with 78 points and behind host Florida State (48), ranked No. 1 in the South Region and No. 18 nationally.
 
True freshman Beau Robinson finished fourth overall for Louisiana (25:29.21) with twin brother Bryce Robinson placing 14th overall in 25:55.44. Following across the finish line for the Ragin' Cajuns included Logan Pearce, (29th, 26:46.47), freshman Logan LaGarde (30th, 26:47.75), Jacob Chicola (32nd, 27:05.72), Sean Bezdek (33rd, 27:12.30) and Dylan Heck (41st, 27:40.86).  
 
The Ragin' Cajuns finished tied with Auburn, ranked No. 2 in the South Region and 35th nationally, in the 11-team field with Florida Gulf Coast (82) finishing fourth and Vanderbilt (112) fifth. Tennessee Tech (147), South Florida (155), Stetson (237), Florida Atlantic (254) and Florida A&M (294) rounded out the top 10 with Jacksonville (298) closing out the field.
 
Louisiana finished fifth overall in the women's 5K race behind FSU, ranked No. 1 in the South Region and No. 9 nationally, in the 10-team event. FSU (72), UCF (73), South Florida (92), Florida A&M (111) and Louisiana (117) finished in the top five with Auburn, ranked No. 7 in the South Region, finishing sixth with 129 points. Jacksonville (196), Stetson (197) and Tennessee Tech (291) rounded out the field.
 
Irwin covered the course in 18:05.59 and was joined in the top-10 by Anna Katherine Devitt, who finished sixth overall in 18:12.33. Danielle Castaldi (22nd, 18:48.10), Kelci Lyons (41st, 19:36.42), Lindsay LaGarde (52nd, 19:58.39), Courtney Broussard (57th, 20:03.93), Claire Hodges (63rd, 20:15.53) and Kaylei Esfeller (77th, 20:44.81).
 
Louisiana will return to action on Friday when it hosts the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Invitational at Acadiana Park.
