Nunn Better: Marshall & Julie Nunn Takes Forward Strides Towards College Careers

Marshall and Julie Nunn are just like any other brother and sister duo these days that enjoy watching Duck Dynasty, spending time with their family and cheering for their favorite football teams.  But as they may have attributes common to everyday brother and sister duos, they are far from average. The sibling speedsters are two of the fastest runners ever to come out of Southlake High School in Groveland, Fl. Sister, Julie, holds the record for fastest times at South Lake high school for the 100, 200, and 400 meters. Brother, Marshall, holds the second fastest times in school history in the 100 and 200 meters, being only beat out by his trainer partner, two sports professional super athlete, Jeffery Demps.

Both high school standouts have kept their forward motion and continued to compete in track and field amongst the college ranks. They both attend schools within their favorite college conference the SEC, with Marshall attending Mississippi State and Julie taking on a new challenge at the University of Florida. Julie previously attended the University of Kentucky, but after completing her four year degree and being able to retain some eligibility, she decided to test both her mind and her body by perusing a Master’s degree in Human Performance and becoming a member of the track and field team. Marshall is going into his sophomore year at Mississippi State continuing his studies in kinesiology and competing very strongly in the 100 meters. The sprinting siblings both credit their running ways to family members for motivation and encouragement to pursue the sport of track and field. Mother, Jean Nunn, was an accomplished 800 meter runner in high school. She served as a role model for Julie to try and excel in the sport of track and field, who was previously a Volleyball player. Same goes for younger brother Marshall, he was previously a football player. After seeing what his older sister Julie had accomplished in track and field, and being encouraged by his family to try the sport seriously, his talent began to truly blossom.

Both are not just runners, but can serve as positive role models for fellow athletes as well. They both have a devout believe in God, family values, and hard work, which they credit to their success in all aspects of life. The duo imparted some advice to future first year athletes traveling away from their comfort zone for school. Julie states, “Don’t Panic! Keep your faith in what you have been doing to this point, and success will follow.” Marshall says to, “keep grounded and reach out to family when away.” Both credit their mutual coach, Dennis Mitchell, for their success in handling college track and field workout and meets with ease. The siblings state “He (Dennis) prepared us for anything. All of his workouts were geared to prepare us both physically and mentally for our races and how to perform on race day.” Through all of the preparation that the brother and sister duo credit to coaches and family both agreed that their strong faith in the lord is what lead them to accomplish their many feats in the sport of track and field. Together the speedsters quoted the movie “Chariots of Fire” that they both believe pertained to them, “God made me for a purpose, but he also made me fast. When I run I feel his pleasure.”
