Solar Eclipse Doesn't Slow Down Sailors At Tri-County Championships

On-Site Coverage

Manatee, Sarasota, and Charlotte county schools tackled one of the tougher courses in the state at the Tri-County Championships. Normally in Florida if you want to run on an incline you are to find a bridge, but in Sarasota the Celery Fields contain a hill that has multiple steep, short climbs. Teams managed to get their run in as the earth was in the midst of creating a rare phenomena; a partial solar eclipse.

In the girls race, Sarasota's Angelina Grebe showed patience in the first mile letting the lead pack dictate the pace, but as mile 1 approached she produced a huge gap that no one could counter. Angie toured the treacherous course in 20 minutes and 10 seconds, while 2nd place to Lakewood Ranch's Andrea McDonald crossed 1 minute and 19 seconds later with a time of 21:19.

The team battle came down to Lakewood Ranch and Sarasota. Sarasota placed 5 in the top 9 to take the victory with 26 points and Lakewood Ranch earned 2nd with 43 points.

The boys race was similar to the girls, where Adam Bradtmueller of Sarasota patiently leading the pack until the 1st mile where Adam pulled away from Cal Davidson-Turner of Cardinal Mooney to take home gold with a time of 17:06. Cal took home the silver with a time of 17:40.

Again the team battle came down to Lakewood Ranch and Sarasota. Sarasota nipped Lakewood Ranch by three points to take the victory with 40 points compared to Lakewood Ranch's 43 points. Lakewood Ranch was led by freshman Kyle Wray who placed 3rd overall.
