In Her Own Words: Brittany McGee - Finding Time

I have been running track for the majority of my life since first grade and now I'm finally a senior! It's crazy to think that I will be done with high school so soon. Something that most people wouldn't really guess about me when they talk to me or see me is that I've gone to a military school that I board at five days a week since I was a freshman. No, it's not as bad as it sounds We do have a bunch of fun and do cool things just like at any other school. One of the most important things that I focus on not only at track practice, but through my entire life is my time management skills and knowing when I have time to do various activities.

So a typical school day for me follows this schedule

6:00- Wake up. Yes, we do get woken up by the trumpet every day.

6:20- Breakfast Formation. This is to make sure that everyone is awake and moving.

7:15-7:45- Morning tutorial for any questions that I have on homework or just hanging out and cleaning my room.

7:45-3:00- GO TO SCHOOL…..

3:00-3:30- Afternoon tutorial/ Track Practice Prep

3:30-5:30- Practice. It cuts it close sometimes and I want to stay out there for longer on some days but I know two hours is what's best for me.

5:30-6:30- Dinner.

6:30-7:00- Shower and relax.

7:00-9:00- Study hall, which is debatably enough time to finish my homework.

9:00-9:30-Hang out with friends downstairs or continue homework.

9:35- TAPS. After this all the overhead lights in our room go out and we are only allowed a desk light.

I can see how people can consider this to be strict or think I have a boring life. But I really have been lucky to be able to have all the opportunities the school has given me. My parents love me just as much as any kid that lives at home everyday, and I have my twin brother with me here, so even when we aren't home I still have someone. Over the years I've learned that to be the best in my academics and athletics I have to give up some things that an ordinary person wouldn't, but my friends support me in my athletic ventures and all the goals that I'm hoping to reach in the future, so a little event here and there are worth giving up to me. My parents always instilled self- discipline, and without it I don't think I would have come this far in track.
