Disney Classic: Claudia Maricela Nu

Submitted by Claudia Nunez

We are officially on our way to Disney World!!! The parents waved their goodbyes to us. Everyone is really excited about this trip. Only eight more hours and we'll be in Mickeyland! I am not looking forward to the long bus ride, but at least it will suit me to think about the race.

We are a mile from Florida right now. Everyone is really tired and eager to get to the hotel. We have about three more hours to go. We are actually running ahead of schedule, which is really good because we get more rest. That is if some decide to head to the pool.

Our trip is being delayed a bit right now because of a minor car crash. I am growing a bit impatient because I'd rather be in the hotel room sleeping.

We just arrived at Disney. Some headed to the pool, I went straight to bed. I am not used to staying up late and decied to get plenty of rest for the parks tomorrow.

We got up today at 7 a.m. to go for a 30 minutee prerace run. We ran nearby other hotels. It was very humid. By the time we fnished, a few jumped into the pool. After we cleaned up and ate breakfast, we divied into groups and headed for the parks.

My group started out at MGM Studios. My friend, Hilary Thomas, and I did not go on any rides at MGM, but we had good time walking around. I even got to dance with Chip and Dale. After MGM, our group took the ferry to the ESPN Zone and ate there. It was really awesome! They had a lot of TVs all around, including the bathrooms! There was even a live radio broadcast taking place. Their food was so delicious! It then started raining really hard.

We then went to Animal Kingdom once the rain settled. Everyone else except for Hilary, Mr. Larry Lorick, and myself got on Mount Everest. They road the rollercoaster more than six times. While we were waiting on them, Hilary and I went to Dinoland and rode the rides. We had a lot of fun at Animal Kingdom although it started pouring hard and at the end, we later went to Epccot.

We only rode the Test Track because of the fact that we had to be back at the hotel by 7 p.m. for a team dinner. After the team dinner, everyone chilled afterwards. Some went swimming, others went to their rooms, I made a friend from Fletcher High in Florida.

I woke up at 6 a.m. to get prepared for the race. At 8 a.m. we boarded the bus to go to the meet. When we first got there, we saw the college men all muddy. We knew what was instore for us. We warmed up and headed to the starting line. On the way, we ran into an old friend, Amber Hines (Chapin class of 2005). She had already ran and told us how bad the mud was.

The girl's varsity team finished second, just shy of winning by only two points. I was recognized for my sixth place finish. The boys varsity got third place. Luke Lovelace finished with the fastest time of the day. The boys JV finished second, placing Kevin Smith, who got third, Randy Drafts, and Scotty Hollbicck in the top 10. We took five Mickey Mouse trophies with us!

The course over all was a challenge, due to the nonstop rain. Running through the mud was a challenge. The mud was not as bad as it was last year. The second mile however, did feel like never ending.

We got back to the hotel at around 1:30ish. We cleaned up and ate and headed once again for the parks. My group went to the Magic Kindom just to ride Space Moutain. We waited in line for nearly an hour because they were having difficulties with the ride. Once the line moved, our turn came fast. We all liked it and decided to go a second time.

After Space Moutain, we rode the Monorail to Epcot. We got on Mission Space first. There were some of us who had never been on Mission Space and decided to go on the less intense first. After the less intense, we went on the more intense. It was really awesome. After Mission Space, we went to go ride Soarin'. Although the wait was like 70 minutes, it was worth it.
After Soarin' we watched the firework show. We then headed back to the hotel. I was so exhausted from the meet and the parks, I fell asleep instantly.

I woke up at 6:30 a.m. to pack my stuff. We left Disney at 7 a.m. Once we got going, everyone fell alseep and the bus got quiet. We stopped to eat breakfast two hours later at McDonald's. The bus ride to South Carolina went by fast than when we were going to Florida. I was really excited to finally return back to Chapin.

Final note
I really enjoyed Disney this year because our team bonded even more. I was also really happy because everyone did such a great job at the meet. My main goal was to redeem myself because I had an upsetting race last year. Despite my time, I felt really happy to be recognized as a top 10 finisher. I couldn't have asked for a more better trip. We all made coach (Jack LeGrand) proud by bringing all those Mickies home!
