Chaminade-Madonna College Prep sophomore Shaun Shivers is one of the best sprinters in the state of Florida and a top football prospect as well. As a freshman, Shivers was 7th in the 100m dash and 6th in the 200m dash at the 2A state meet. We caught up with him to talk about how he got his start in the sport, his goals for 2016, and more!

Flrunners.com: How did you get started in track and field?

Shaun Shivers: When I was younger, about four years old, my mom signed me up for the Ft. Lauderdale Track Club. Coach Dix was my first trainer and my cousin Harry Adams trained me as well.

FLR: Coach Dix's son Maurice had a great high school and college career as did Harry. What was it like to learn from guys like that?

SS: It was great because they help me out a lot and put me in the great position that I am in now.

FLR: You are one of the top sophomore sprinters in the state and class of 2018 football players in the country. How do the two sports make you a better athlete?

SS: Football gets me stronger and gives me more power so it helps me a lot with track Track helps me a lot with football because I'm always the fastest man on the field.

FLR: Last year, you clocked personal bests of 10.69 in the 100 and 21.32 in the 200. What are the goals for 2016?

SS: My goals are to run 10.3 in the 100m dash and 20.5 in the 200m dash.

FLR: What's a typical workout week like for you and do you have a favorite workout?

SS: All of the workouts are my favorites. I love them all. Mondays are hard days. Tuesdays are either hard days or speed days. Wednesday and Thursday are speed days and Fridays are light days or block days.

FLR: Who would you say your biggest competition on the track is?

SS: I'm looking forward to going against Bruce Judson from Cocoa in the 100 and 200. He's my main competition in 2A.

FLR: What meets do you have circled on your calendar this spring?

SS: The meets I'm looking forward to are Louie Bing, the Southridge Spartan Invitational, and other large meets.

FLR: A lot of state's think they have the fastest sprinters, but we all know what the truth is. Why is Florida the best state for speed?

SS: We are the best at everything. Also, we compete at different levels then other states. Ain't nothing like Florida speed.

FLR: What makes Shaun Shivers such a strong athlete?

SS: I work really hard. I try to be the fastest man on the track so everything I do is 100%.
