The 2016 track and field season was filled with spectacular performances in every discipline. We wanted to know ask the fans which athletes they thought were the best of the best and deserved to be named Florida Track & Field Athletes of the Year. Nearly 9,000 votes came in and the winners are Sophia Falco of Lakewood Ranch High School and Tristan Schultheis of Astronaut High School. (Photos by Donald Lamb/Tyler Copeland)

Girls Winner: Sophia Falco (Lakewood Ranch High School)

The Lakewood Ranch rising senior played an integral role in leading her team to the 4A state championship. Falco was 5th in the 200, runner-up in the 100m dash and triple jump, and won the state title in the long jump. In the long jump she cleared 20 feet or more three times including wins at Flo Golden South and 5th place showing at New Balance Nationals Outdoor. She was also 5th at that meet in the 100m dash and was first in the triple jump with a personal best of 40'5", her second jump of the year over 40 feet. Falco had the most votes of either girl or boy in the poll with an astonishing 3,501 votes (50.19% of 6.976 total votes in girls poll)!

"It's amazing to think that so many people support me in what I do. I couldn't have achieved anything without those types of people that have helped me pursue my journey. I was proud of what I accomplished this season and I'm excited for what I will be able to do in the future. I would like to thank everyone involved in my success but most importantly my 2 coaches, Mark Napier and Larry Ryans. Without their encouragement and love I don't know if I could have done anything near to what I have. I am very grateful for them and I thank them endlessly for the time they have and continue put in for me."

Boys Winner: Tristan Schultheis (Astronaut High School)

Schultheis, a University of Miami signee, jumped 7'0" on four different occasions and cleared a state leading and US#6 (tie) 7'2" at the Astronaut Invitational. The mark is tied for second ever in Florida history only behind Sam Hill of New Smyrna Beach's 7'2.75" in 1992.

"It means a lot to me to be voted Athlete of the Year. I've had a tough past couple months with the sudden passing of my mom this past June and to win this means a lot. She;s always been my number 1 fan so I know she's looking down proud of me. To sum up my 2016 season it was a blast, having the opportunity to be the best in the state and one of the best in the nation at what I do is a really great accomplishment, but it's not over yet, I still have Jr Olympics tomorrow so hopefully I can win that too. I'd like to thank everyone who voted for me and thought that I was the right person to win this, it really means a lot."
