FACA/flrunners.com Preseason Cross Country Poll

It's cross country time!!! August is here so we can officially shift gears and we do so by kicking of preseason coverage with the FACA/flrunners.com Preseason Poll. At the FACA Clinic each summer the coaches are nominated by their peers to serve as pollsters for each classification. These seasoned vets and stat nuts scower the results and compile these based performances, calculations, insight, and maybe a little inside information.
Following these preseason rankings, the first regular season poll will be published every Wednesday (meaning they are due on Tuesday) starting on September 24. The boys rankings will be the first week, followed by the girls, and so on.
We are sending these to every major newspaper in the state... hopefully to see them published and our sport get a little ink.
Remember these are just predictions and just for fun, there is a reason we still run the races! Good luck to all and finish off your summer base well!

These rankings were compiled using last year’s State XC results, graduations, and migration along with my thoughts on the rate of improvement from the State series track & field results. I would very much appreciate any input anyone can send me as to news, results, thoughts, etc., to better align the current happenings with the best possible educated predictions. The accuracy of this Ranking depends on the XC community sharing their findings with me. Send your input to: Jose_Fernandez@scps.k12.fl.us
The biggest drop in team place was Maclay (losing 2 to graduation and the Fenley sisters to migration). Two things are certain from this: 1) We will have to pay taxes. 2) Gary Droze will no doubt have any potential that shows up on his squad primed and ready by the time the State series begins. Well, may this serve all as some great motivation throughout the season. Let’s toe the starting line…
TEAMS
1. Community School - Last season had a 1-5 split of :29 AND their top 5 sub 19:50 on the state course. Everyone returns. The Fluehr sisters had a great track season and the Burfield sisters also did well. If this team stays healthy, they will have the opportunity to repeat as State Champions. They only have one serious contender for the State Championship and it will not be easy for the #2 ranked team to dethrone them.
2. Holy Trinity Academy - Will be very much in the hunt to chase down CSN. Only 16 points away last season. This team had 4 girls run sub 11:40 at the Region track meet. Kucera Grace ran 11:28 at the state track meet, but was not in their top 7 XC last season (will she run XC this season?). This could be another team that will have their top 5 and maybe a 6th sub 19:50 on the State course. The battle for a State Championship will be exciting to see.
3. Lakeland Christian - Last season, they were 5th only 5 pts. from 4th place. Both Mallory White & Rebecca Eaves had great track seasons. The two front runners on this team should make up those 5 points. This team should have their top 5 sub 21:00 on the State course.
4. Canterbury - Last season, they were 4th (5 points ahead of the 3rd place ranked team). Emily Edwards ran 11:33 (as a 6th grader!). This team may have 6 girls under 21:00 on the state course keeping them close to 3rd.
5. Keswick Christian - Last season, they placed 6th. A young team made up of five 7th graders and two 8th graders should show improvements through maturity. They had an o-kay track season and should maintain current position.
6. St. Johns Country Day - Last season, they were 10th. Three of their top 5 were 7th graders and their top two (Dunn & Bane) are coming off of a solid track season. They should have 4 girls sub 21:30. Their #5 is 1:17 behind their #4 giving them a great challenge to move up a spot.
7. Pk Young - Last season, they were 9th two points ahead of SJCD. Two of their top 5 are 400m sprinters (Brown 1:04/2:35 & Skidmore 1:02/2:27) and their #7 is a hurdler (Whittaker :51.58). Their #1 had an o-kay track season (5:41/12:30). This team has the potential to have two go sub 20:00 and their #4 & #5 to go sub 21:50.
8. Shorecrest Prep - Last season, they were 11th five points behind Pk Young & and three points behind SJCD. Their top 2 (Sarah & Lindsey) had o-kay track seasons. Like SJCD, this team has a far #5 (:58 behind their #4). They should have three girls sub 21:00 (two in the very low 20’s) and a long shot to get #4 sub 21:00 on the state course. Again…the #5 will be crucial.
9. Dade Christian - Last season, they were 8th. They lose their #3 to graduation while they were a young team last season with five 8th graders and one 9th grader. Their 8th graders seemed to have a good track season. They should have two in the low 20’s, two in the mid 21’s and two in the high 21’s on the state course.
10. Berkeley Prep - Last season, they were 7th. They lost their #2 & #7 to graduation. Their returning gap from their #1 to #2 is 1:50. D’Angelo had an o-kay track season (11:49). D’Angelo should be in the low 19’s. This team should have two one the low 21’s one in the mid 21’s and their #5 in the high 21’s/low 22’s on the state course.

TEAMS
I've decided to abandon objectivity this year and use last year's overall results as a foundation rather than only using prior state meet results. It doesn't do justice to the teams that have solid JV squads and are hit hard by graduation to use just state meet results. The Jacksonville powerhouses are still in effect and it's extremely close between Bishop Kenny and Episcopal with BK given the edge. As always, summer training and new unknown runners can always have a great impact on teams and their rankings!
1. Bishop Kenny (3) Wow it's close between BK and the number 2 team! BK's depth helps a team hit by graduation.
2. Episcopal (1) Will fight hard to claim the top spot and their 4th consecutive state title in 2A
3. The Bolles (4) Returns their entire squad and a rumored returner may help their cause
4. Lake Highland Prep (2) Unfortunately loses #6 finisher on the team from state to another school
5. Lincoln Park Academy (9) Young team makes a huge jump after losing only 1 to graduation
6. Cardinal Gibbons (6) Hangs on to their state finish place from last year.
7. Archbishop McCarthy (12) Makes a huge jump from last year's state finish
8. Ransom Everglades (7) Loses a few to graduation, but can reload.
9. Gulf Breeze (11) Impressive 2007 season and a top 15 runner should give this team the confidence to crack the top 10
10. Naples (8) Needs to find a solid #5 runner, which they'll probably manage.

4A Girls CC Team Rankings:
Rank. (State 07) Team, Region- Commentary
1. (1) Bartram Trail, 1- The defending champions get the bid as the top seed for the 2008 season even though the #2 team returns a technical faster five. Why? These Bears completely dominated during track season. Coach Frank had nine girls sub 6 in the 1600 (8 returning) and seven girls sub 13 in the 3200 (all returning). Melanie Novack and Callie Cooper (both top ten at state; Cooper with outstanding Track season), should easily lead these strong girls back to the trophy stand this upcoming season. Upcoming star: Allison Gubitz, 11.
2. (2) Our Lady of Lourdes*, 4- The mighty Bobcats come back strong and young once again this year, but I feel they have a lot of work to do to catch BT this season. A new freshman should easily crack their top 3, but a lackluster track season for this top caliber team shows only four returning sub 6 milers and three returning sub 13 two milers (and that includes the new freshman for both events). Can
3. (5) Winter Park*, 1- Just when I thought the Wildcats were in a distant third, I soon come to learn that two new transfers should quickly change up things a bit. While Ana Groff is sitting out to concentrate on track, transfers Marjorie Ducos and Shelby Hayes will more than easily pick up the missing slack. WP still has a lot of work to do, but should easily catch the above teams if someone slips. Senior Meggie Emons will also lead the Park as she comes back from an injury during track.
--------------------
4. (7) Vero Beach, 2- I typically have a good feeling about the VB Indians and for this season I think this young and strong team will come out and really surprise people. I can easily picture them staggering the ‘Region of Death’ teams, and I can see Lauren Lapointe aiming for another top ten finish at State. [Note: She’s my highest ranked underclassman, and there are no seniors in their varsity team. Can anyone say it’s too early for favorites for the 2009 season?!]
5. (8) Winter Springs, 1- The first of three teams returning an entire top 7 from State last year, and I know they’ll impress me by finishing higher than last year’s team! These handful of seniors have been running together for a while and now it’s their time to reap the benefits of their hard work. They’re also one of the better pack style teams compared to many of the girls programs in the state. Go Bears!
6. (NR) Niceville*, 1- Ladies and Gents, the Golden Eagles are back in the game! This team is a classic example of what many other teams strive to achieve in their programs. We have a couple of veteran girls (Cox and Keel) leading a slew of promising younger runners, along with a couple of dedicated coaches. That combination will definitely get this team where it needs to be come late November. Keep it up Niceville!
7. (10) Timber Creek, 1- The second of three teams returning their entire State squad, I’m putting faith in these Wolves because I think they can impress people when it matters; at the end of the season. They are one of only four teams in the state whose 1-5 team spread is less than 60 seconds; and we all know that teams that work together always perform better. [Note:
8. (9)
T-9. (6) Spruce Creek*, 1- Call me a wishful thinker but I think if Brooke Nebel puts together one heck of a season with Amanda Perkins, I think we can expect big things from the Hawks this season. Then again, in Region 1, you never know what can happen. So for now I have this strong team splitting the 6th position with...
T-9. (NR) Dr. Phillips, 1- The DP Panthers! A team with a strong 4 pack, but as we know, a slightly off 5th runner could be that one little thing that makes a Region of Death team just miss the big show. Pack it in girls, no weak links will suffice!
10. (3)
--------------------
11. (13) Spanish River, 3- Not only does Coach Rothman return his entire State team from last year, but nearly all of his Shark squad will be underclassmen! So can we expect this young team to make a bid for top ten this year, and we can look forward to future performances by this young group as well! See you all at the Falcon!
12. (12) Coral Springs, 3- The third strong 1-5 pack team on my list, the one thing (I feel) that is inhibiting these Colts from making the top ten (besides the other teams being faster) is that they have no depth! A 90 second gap from their 5th to 6th runner makes the top 5 complacent in their spots! Find more runners, get more competitive! At least that’s my suggestion.
13. (15) Sarasota Riverview, 2- If Coach Means has a hidden 5th girl in ace up his sleeve, now would be the time to pull her out. These Rams are another team seriously hurting from not having that depth or that last runner to close out their scoring team. Get in those classrooms and hallways and recruit gals!
14. (18) Lakeland, 2- A tough Sydney Devore should easily lead these Dreadnaughts to another state meet, and with the majority of their top team being seniors, we should expect great final performances from them at the State Meet this year.
15. (19) Sickles, 2- Another young team that just knows how to get it done, these Gryphons look to move up into the top 15 as long as they stay healthy and keep doing what they’ve been doing in the past. Good luck girls!
--------------------
16. (20) Douglas, 3- Somewhat in no man’s land, the Douglas Eagles comfortably move up as other teams graduate athletes and they return a young bunch including 6 from their state team that was 20th a season ago.
--------------------
18. (16)
21. (NR) Flanagan, 3- Return 5 from their 7th place at Region 3.
22. (23)
23. (NR) Northwestern, 4- Return 5 from their 7th place at Region 4.
24. (NR) Coral Reef, 4- Return 6 from their 10th place at District 8.
Upcoming Teams: Gaither, 2;
Boxed Out (Region 1): Lyman (NR),
[Note: All three of these teams are capable of being a top 15 team.]

TEAMS
1. Trinity Prep- Defending 1A state champions, only graduate their #2 runner Tommy Ward. Led by senior Ranley Gousse, they will repeat easily.
2. Maclay- Although they lose their #5 runner they are still strong, led by sophomore sensation Patrick Swain.
3. Holy Trinity- The Tigers will be looking to send Coach Butler out on top, with this being his last season. They need a 5 man.
4. Berkeley Prep- Led by Tyler Greathouse they will look for that leadership that was lost with Richard Blake.
5. Shorecrest Prep- Could be the darkhorse and sneak into the top 3.
6. PK Yonge- They lose a lot of talent but rebuild every year.
7. Community School- Kyle Carufe graduates and this could be a generous ranking. I believe these boys will pull through in the end.
8. Palmer Trinity School- Very young team with a TON of talent
9. Bishop Snyder- 10th place at state last year but graduate their #1 runner...thats tough to overcome.
10. Tampa Prep School- Could have put them higher but they are young and they lost their #1 and 3 guys.
11. St. John Neumann- It will be interesting to see if Taylor Peliska can step up and lead the Irish to a top 5 finish.
12. North Fla. Christian- This could be the year that Whitney Strickland wins state and the team finishes in the top 5.
13. Upperroom Christian- Very young team that you dont hear a lot about throughout the season. They always show up at state.
14. Berean Christian- DO NOT be surprised if this team finishes in the top 6-7
15. Jay- Great coach, young team, and a ton of talent that just needs work. If the summer training has been consistent, they could be a top 10 team in no time.
INDIVIDUALS
1. Whitney Strickland (NFC)- 3rd as a sophomore, 2nd as a junior......
2. Patrick Swain (Maclay)- Young talent that never ceases to amaze me.
3. Josh Wolfe (First Academy)- Came out of nowhere last year and will impress a lot of people this year
4. Andrew Jarriel (Berean)- Had an off day at CC state last year but ran well in the 3200 at the state track meet
5. Bret Butler (HTEA)- HT has had someone in the top 3 the last 3-4 years. Can he pull through?
6. Mark Allen (Palmer Trinity)- Will lead Palmer Trinity to a top 10 finish if he can land on the podium
7. Ranley Gousse (Trin. P)- Will do anything to help his team win, and that could propel him to a top 5 finish
8. Patrick Groome (St. Ed's)- Ran VERY well as a sophomore. Another year of experience cant hurt
9. Taylor Peliska (Neumann)- With a consistent summer of high mileage he WILL show people what the Irish are all about
10. Tyler Truitt (HTEA)- HT's #2 guy...stepping out of the shadows
Honorable Mention- Marc Akbar, Conor Sweeney, Stefon Napier, Billy Naylor, Patrick Griffin, Tyler Greathouse, David Kilgore

TEAMS
1) Melbourne:
Strengths: Brian Atkinson need I say more. He is the returning State Champion in 4A XC, and in the 3200 in 2007/2008 Track Seasons. This team by far has the best top 4 returners in the entire state of Florida.
Weakness: #5 on his own can score over 100 come November 22, 2008. They need someone to step up big come this Fall.
Possible Impact Player: Fiqueroa, Ricky 800m 2:07 400m 53, Alex Tongue 2:15 800m or Jacob Stewart 11:30 3200m.
1) Atkinson, Brian 15:33
2) Post, James 16:19
3) Fagan, Erik 16:20
4) McGee, Dillon 16:27
5) Gold, Marc 18:09
2) Miami Columbus:
Strength: Armando Del Valle 15:56 as a freshmen, District and Regional Champion. This team is deep; a possible 11 athletes can break the 17:00 mark come this fall.
Weakness: The worst Summer Training their coach has seen. Look for Columbus to be sluggish in the beginning of this year’s season.
Possible Impact Player: Gabriel De la Torre 4:47mile, and Andrew Shaheen 10:57 3200m, Chris Ventura 10:46 3200m
1) Del Valle, Armando 15:56

3) Gulesian, George 16:37
4) Rowe, Robert 16:44
5) Gulesian, Mark 16:44
3) Sarasota
Strength: Jonathan Lanning16:05 followed by a very strong 2 and 3. Look for these 3 individuals to all be in the top 25 this year at states.
Weakness: They only have 5 guys number # 6 runs 19:28
Possible Impact Players: Julian Gomez 11:05 3200m, Seth Lanning 2:07 800m
1) Lanning, Jonathan 16:05

3) Tiesi, Alexander 16:36
4) Mason, Kyle 17:10
5) Mason, James 17:19
4) Winter Park
Strength: Coach Hill, the Park Pack, and the fact that this team is always prepared to run when States comes around. I see them to possibly finish in that 2 or 3 spot if their #1 breaks into the top 10.
Weakness: No solid #1 Front Runner
Possible Impact Players: Evan Meewes 2:04 800m, Theo Hemberger 11:07 3200m, Zach Daly 18:15 5k, Ansel Mallonee 18:07 5k

3) Posada, Nick 16:59
4) Alte, Caleb 17:13
5) Kingsley, Tommy 17:46
5) Mandarin:
Strength: A very Strong # 1Eduardo Garcia should be a top 5 finisher at states. This team looks real good!!! They had a very good track season, and I see it transferring over to this Cross Country Season…
Weakness: 3-5 need to step it up big in order to be in the hunt for States.
Possible Impact Players: Drew Rowland 10:17 3200m
1) Garcia, Eduardo 16:11.00
2) Morgun, Vitaliy 16:57.00
3) Duncan, Matthew 17:12.53
4) Rowland, William 17:19.18
5)Martins, Delano 17:32.00
6) Ferguson
Strength: Joshua Estrada Region 4 3200m Champion. This team has been working hard all summer, I see this team finishing in the top 4 if they could find that #5.
Weakness: # 5 could be a stud or a dud. The search is on Ryan! For that #5 spot…
Possible Impact Player: Markovich 2:00 800m
1) Estrada, Joshua 16:14.26
2) Ayala, Arturo 16:41.00

4) Ortega, Alan 17:00.00
5) Markovich, Carlos
7)Bartram Trail
Strength: This team the last few years has impressed me big time, and always has their best race at States. With Eric Ochoa at the helm they seem to be at a solid fit for this 7th Spot.
Weakness: Their 3-5 must march its way down to under 17:00!!!!!
Possible Impact Players: Anthony Popiel 4:44 mile, and 2:03 800m
1) Eric Ocha 16:26.88

1) Fernandez, Steven 16:25
2) Montalvo, Jesus 17:17
3) Betancourt, Kenny 17:25
4) Fernandez, Andres 17:26
5) Hernandez, Christian 17:31
9)Lyman
Strengths: They return 5 of their top 7 runners, and Sean Rynning has a shot to crack into top 10. The drive of not making it to states last year could very well put them on the map this year.
Weakness:3-5 Pack is in the mid 17’s

10) Park Vista –
Strength: They have a solid Pack in the 17’s
Weakness: Pack is in the 17’s and must get into the 16’s to have a title shot.

1) Booker, Justin 17:07
2) Darling, David 17:13
