Foot Locker South Florida Preview: The Quest For San Diego

Boys Preview

(Highlights of the 2015 Foot Locker South Boys Seeded Race)

The boys field at Foot Locker South boasts all four Florida state champions. Mount Dora Christian Academy and 1A winner Gabriel Curtis is not listed on the entries, but is rumored to be in attendance and will race along side 2A champion Caleb Pottorff, 3A's Michael Phillips, and 4A winner Matthew Doyle of Winter Springs.

The top two Floridians have to be Caleb Pottorff of Lincoln Park Academy and Bolles sophomore Charles Hicks who went 1-2 in 2A and own the state's two fastest times at 15:08.12 and 15:09.13 which coincidently were some of the best ever at a state meet held at Apalachee Regional Park behind only Sukhi Khosla, was 35th at Nike Nationals in 2014. If Pottorff and Hicks want to make it to San Diego they will have to run their bests as they currently are ranked inside the top 25 at number 24 and 25 respectively. Pottorff, an FSU signee recently let us in on his latest training regiment, saying he was, "in the best shape of his life."

3A Cross Country Finals champion Michael Phillips of Chiles is entered in the field and has a personal best time of 15:27.80 from Pre-State. Phillips has finished third or better in all eight races he's competed in this season and told us after the state meet that he was excited for the postseason.

Coach Doug Butler and his teams have been making the trip to North Carolina for years including names like Kayla Hale and Brian Atkinson during his years at Holy Trinity. Now with Satellite, Butler brings a group that were third at the 2A Cross Country Finals. Trevor Kattenberg was Team Florida's 5th man last year as a sophomore and finished 30th overall. He is the top returner for the Sunshine State based on those results as the top four all graduated.

Others to watch for include Mason Jones (33rd in 2015), UF signee Matthew Clark (37th in 2015) and Creekside teammate Nick Deal, Chase Hyland (53rd in 2015), 1A state champion Gabriel Curtis, and 4A state champion Matt Doyle).
