Scouting Report: Columbus Boys


4A was the toughest classifications for boys in 2016. Just ask Miami Columbus. The team finished in 4th, but just 2.5 points away from a state championship. Coach Fernando Foyo returns a large nucleus for this season and gives us an inside look at the Explorers who are predicted to make the podium according to our 4A pre-season team scores.

How did your team finish last year at state?

We finished in 4th, 2 1/2 points back.

Who are your top returners? Trajan Bandy (100 M 4x 100 M), CJ Henderson (100, 200, 4x100, 4X400), Joshua Jobe (100, 200, 4x100, 4x400), Tyler Harrell (200, 4x100, 4x400), Deshay Fernandes (4x800, 1600, 3200, 4x400, 800), Chris Bentley (PV), Rondy Powell (SP, Discus), Clyde Dozier (110 HH, 300 IH), and Robert Crockett (LJ, TJ, HJ).

Do you have any key losses from last season?

We lose Humberto Freire due to graduation. (800, 1600, 4x800, 4x400).

Any impact freshman coming in or transfers?

Xzavier Henderson is an impact freshman. He will be doing the 800, 400, 4x400, 4x800, and HJ. (Learn more about Henderson who was one of the stars of the 2016 FLYRA Middle School State Championship.)



What are you focusing on this year?

We are focusing on just being a total team.

What meets are you keying in on this year?

We are keying in on Louie Bing, Southridge Invite, Sam Burley, GMAC, IMG Pre-State, and the state series.

What are the goals of this year's squad?

Try to win a state championship .

How would you describe this year's team?

Well rounded and very talented. Hungry and hard working.

Is there anything else you want to add?

I brought Jimmy Hardwick over from Miami Jackson High School to help me and he has been a tremendous addition.
