NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The mission continues, Florida track and field's saying goes, and there is one clear objective for this weekend's SEC Indoor Championships: compete with intensity, enthusiasm, passion, and, above all else, pride.
"Any time you go into a championship situation, it's big for the University of Florida because that's who we are," head coach
Mike Holloway said. "That's what we live for around here."
Florida's men, ranked No. 1 all season long, enter this weekend as one of the favorites. Boasting a Division I-leading seven times and marks ranked in the top five nationally, the Gators, on paper, have enough top-end talent to topple teams more reliant on depth.
Since 1991, Florida and Arkansas have won every SEC Indoor title. The Gators took home victories in 2004, 2011, and 2015. It is likely the competition will once again come down to a tug of war between these heavyweights.
While it will take more than a few surprises for the women to nab a fourth indoor title in eight years, breakout performances from the likes of
Sharrika Barnett (400 meters),
Lloydricia Cameron (shot put), and
Yanis David (triple jump) give the Gators plenty to be excited about.
"The SEC Indoor Championships is one of the most intense competitions you'll ever be in," Holloway said. "And the great thing about it is, everybody in the building, whether you've got a great team or great individual, everybody comes here with an attitude, everybody wants to win.
"I just challenge my team to join the party. Let's match their intensity, let's match their enthusiasm, and we'll be fine."
