Arroyo Posts World Standard, All-Time No. 2 at Virginia Challenge

Andres Arroyo tied the second-fastest time in school history--which was the fastest time by a Gator in 15 years--and clinched a spot at this year's IAAF World Championships.
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Florida senior Andres Arroyo should once again be back on the international stage come August, as the Puerto Rican half-miler hit the IAAF World Championships qualifying standard of 1:45.90, clocking a 1:45.74 Friday (April 21) night at the Virginia Challenge.

Arroyo, an Olympic semifinalist last year, also tied Moise Joseph (2002) for the second-fastest 800 meters time in school history. Only Mark Everett's 29-year-old school record (1:44.46) is faster.

Arroyo's time ranks third among collegians this year.

Fellow senior half-miler Ryan Schnulle posted a season-best time of 1:48.84, likely solidifying an NCAA East Preliminary berth.

Saturday's (April 22) session featured a rainy evening, though senior Taylor Tubbs posted a 16:14.09 in her 5,000 meters opener, the No. 30-ranked time in the East Region. Tubbs qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Championships in the 5,000 last year.

Other season-bests Saturday came from Jack Beitter (1,500 meters), Amber Johnson (1,500 meters), and Caitlin McQuilkin-Bell (3,000-meter steeplechase).
