Kalon Barnes Upsets Dream 100 Field To Take Adidas Boost Boston Games Boys Title

Until April, Silsbee (Tx.) High junior Kalon Barnes was best known for being an accomplished football player with a bright future. 

Then a few things started to happen for the 5-foot-11, 170-pound athlete and three-star football prospect. 

He committed to Baylor University on May 4. Then he ran a US No. 2 time of 10.22 seconds 100m dash at the Texas University Interscholastic League Track and Field Championships on May 13, winning his first of two state championships. Then came the adidas Boston Boost Games Dream 100 invitation. 

What was next for Barnes? 

On Sunday, the high-rising Texas sprint star upset the prodigious field in Somerville, Massachusetts, running 10.34 seconds in lane 1 to win his first national-caliber race against Anthony Schwartz, the World Youth U18 100m record holder -- who was recovering from injury in early May at his own state championships. 

Schwartz, a prolific duel-threat athlete and four-star football recruit, ran 10.41 seconds in his first race back from the FHSAA Track and Field Championships, where he incurred an injury that prevented him from repeating his 100m and 200m crowns. 

Still, Barnes' outing was impressive on its own. Auburndale (Fl.) High senior Chauncy Smart was third (10.57), East Ridge (Fl.) High junior Lavonte Valentine was fouth (10.59) and Manvel (Tx.) High senior Caleb Jolivette was fifth (10.82).
