Jenny Simpson Becomes 2nd Fastest U.S. Miler Of All-Time

Jenny Simpson continued her excellent 2017 season at the London stop of the Diamond League. Simpson ran the mile in 4:19.88, two seconds faster than her previous best of 4:22.18, and the second fastest ever by an American. The time broke Shannon Rowbury's old mark and only trails that of Mary Slaney who ran 4:16.71 in 1985.


Simpson was fifth in the race overall behind Angelika Cichocka of Poland, Winny Chebet of Kenya, Laura Muir of Great Britain, and Hellen Obiri also from Kenya.The former Oviedo High School standout and 2016 Olympic bronze medalist will return to London for the World Championships in August.

Last month, she won her fourth straight USA Championship in the 1,500m. Simpson won gold in the 1,500m in 2011at the World Championships in Daegu and silver in Moscow in 2013.
