In Her Own Words: Nicole Matysik - 'Hurricane Irma Wasn't Going To Stop Me From Training'

Key West junior Nicole Matysik was 6th at last year's 2A cross country finals with a personal best of 18:20.84 in Tallahassee. Now as we enter the fourth week of the regular season, Matysik has yet to make her season debut, and because of Hurricane Irma she will have to wait even longer.

We caught up with her days before the storm hit to check in on her training. Matysik and her family stayed in Key West during the storm and as she tells us in this week's blog she is back at training.

Hi everyone, First of all, I just want to let everyone know my family and I got through Irma fine and thankfully our house doesn't have any major damage. We stayed in Key West during the storm. School is still out until electricity and water get turned back on, and until people are allowed back into Key West. That means I've been training on my own this week as well.

I did not let Irma stop me from training! I had to plan around the weather, but I still managed. The storm hit the Keys Saturday night/ Sunday morning. I made sure to get my workout in Saturday morning and Sunday I did some core and stretching inside and that's my rest day anyways. The rest of the week I continued with my regular plan.

I was supposed to race last Saturday and unfortunately that got cancelled. This Saturday I was also supposed to race but that also was cancelled. Even though it's a little frustrating that I haven't been able to really begin my season yet, I'm hungrier than ever to race, My coach assured me that this will not effect me negatively, and that I will be ready for when it counts.

My goals are still the same, I'm focusing on the state meet and footlocker. Like I said in my previous entry, it's important to stay positive and look for the good in every situation. The support of all my family and friends has been tremendous. I can't wait to officially begin my season soon! -Nicole Matysik
