1A Girls Late Season Rankings

by Sue O'Malley-Father Lopez Catholic High School somalley@fatherlopez.org

Team Rankings:

Commentary: Citrus Park Christian still holds the #1 spot in the rankings with 5 girls ranked in the top 15. As we come into the post-season we see Circle Christian charging and lowering team average by 5 seconds. Maclay moves up to 3rd and this team is well coached knows what it takes to be on the podium in November .St. Joseph still very much in this hunt. But never count out Oak Hall. As we wind down the regular season the next two weeks and begin post season, the fun now begins! Best wishes to all of the teams as we start to turn on the course to the 3 mile and post season.

3A Girls Late Season Rankings

by Steve Farnsworth, Lecanto HS, farnsworthfarm@yahoo.com

Team Rankings:

Commentary:  The rankings are now based on times and performances since September 25th in order to keep the rankings as current as possible.  The preponderance of large meets on well-known courses has helped to weed out atypical performances on lesser-known courses.  Some teams that started very fast are beginning to fade, while others are coming into end-of-season form.  This poll lists the top six teams in each region, plus the next best team as a wild card.  This format will leave out some teams that are top-25, but get bumped out by being in a tough region.  Team averages are given for reference only and are not the only basis for rankings, and do not follow them completely -- course conditions, head to head competition, and team depth is also considered.  Times from known or suspected fast and slow courses have had time added or deducted to prevent ranking skew.

Rank, (Previous Rank), Team, Region, Team Average/Comments

1. (1) Chiles, 1,  18:49 (+20).  Although the Timberwolves trained through Alligator Lake, they came out firing at the Great American XC Festival and took second.  Yes, Wake Med is a fast course, but taking second against some of the best teams in the SE US is a pretty good indication of team quality.

2. (3) Creekside, 1,  19:47.  The Knights defeated Niceville both at Alligator Lake and Pre-State.

3. (2) Niceville, 1,  20:12.  The Eagles did not look strong at either Alligator Lake or Pre-State.  They did not run their top runner at Pre-State, but it does not look like she would have made a difference.

4. (4) Osceola (Seminole), 3,  21:04 (-20).  The Warriors took seventh in the FLRunners Race of Champions, and third at the LOL Gator Invite despite resting their varsity.

5. (5) Ponte Vedra, 1,  20:54.  The Sharks finished eleventh in the Pre-State Elite race.

6. (6) Ft. Walton Beach, 1,  21:10.  The Vikings have not looked as strong when they aren't running on fast Panhandle courses, but still maintain their ranking.

7. (18) Ft. Myers, 3,  21:17.  The Green Wave looked better taking nineteenth in the Pre-State elite race, but are still running below expectations.

8. (NR) Naples, 3,  21:37.  The Eagles get back into the rankings, grabbing fifteenth in the FLRunners ROC and fifth in the Disney 3A race.

9. (NR) Leon, 1,  21:44.  The Lions rejoin the rankings with a tenth-place finish in the Pre-State Select race.

10. (NR) Nease, 1,  21:42.  The Panthers grab the wild card slot this week, as Gulf Breeze and Lincoln falter.

11. (8) Matanzas, 2,  21:41.  The Pirates were fourteenth in the Pre-State Select race.

12. (16) Cape Coral, 3,  22:10 (-20).  The Seahawks placed sixteenth in the FLRunners ROC.

13. (17) Land O'Lakes, 2,  21:43.  The Gators took second at their own invitational, but several top teams rested their varsity runners.

14. (23) South Fork, 4,  22:53 (+20).  The Bulldogs ran well at both FLRunners and Pre-State.

15. (11) Charlotte, 3,  22:13 (-20).  The Tarpons have slipped a bit as key runners miss meets.

Other teams to watch out for:

16. (9) Ocala Vanguard, 2,  22:15.  The Knights won the Marion County championships, but weren't pushed.

17. (12) Robinson, 3,  22:14. The Knights placed 24th in the Pre-State Elite race.

18. (15) Viera, 4,  22:27.  The Hawks finished twentieth in the Pre-State Select race.

19. (24) Miami Northwestern, 4,  22:23.  The Bulls took third in the 305 Classic and won King of the Hill.

20. (NR) Reagan/Doral, 4,  22:54 (-20).  The Bison break into the rankings with a second-place finish at the 305 Classic.

21. (21) Mater Academy, 4,  22:54 (-20).  The Lions were fifth at Run for the Stars, but need to develop a better No. 5 runner.

22. (19) Harmony, 2,  22:39.  The Longhorns struggled at FLRunners, but looked better at Disney.

23. (14) Sunlake, 2,  22:46.  The Seahawks placed second at Weeki-Wachee, but bombed at the Gator Invite.

24. (22) West Shore, 4,  23:46 (-20).  The Wildcats were second at the Melbourne HS Invite on a slow course.

25. (20) Ocala Forest, 2,  23:34.  The Wildcats have not run well in their last three meets and have depth issues.

Individual Rankings:

Commentary: The last two weeks' times and the course adjustments are being used in the same way as in the team rankings.  Two-week season bests are listed, but are not the sole factor in rankings - head to head competition, and consistency in times is also considered.  As expected, some early-season hot shots are starting to fade, while others are coming into late-season form.

2A Boys Late Season Rankings

By Carlos Maymi, St. Brendan HS / St. Thomas University, maymicarlos@yahoo.com

Team Rankings:

Commentary: First I would like to say how much I enjoy doing these boys rankings, things are pointing to an exciting end to the season. Great job to the coaches for a job well done so far.

Rank. (Previous Rank) School = Comments

1. (1) Bolles HS -- Best team in the all classifications right now.  7th in the Nike Race of Champions at Great American. Lead by Hicks this team beat in state contender Satellite by 121 pts.

2.(2)  Satellite- Don't let the aforementioned points at Great American fool you, Satellite still can put up a fight at states. 3 of the 7 hit a season best this past race, and they still have an average spread of less than 20 seconds. If this pack continues to improve and stick together, Bolles may be looking over their shoulder.

3. (6)  Bishop Kenny- last week I said "I don't think this team has shown what it can actually do yet, and that's scary considering what they are running now" and boom they crack into the top 3. With a great run Jubran at Pre-State, and a solid performance from the back four. Especially with Kaczorowski and Kennedy hitting new PR's. They edged out Trinity Prep by 13 pts.

4. (3) Trinity Prep- Great run at Pre States, but no one particularly ran a great time to their standards with only the number 6 hitting a PR and SB at states (congrats James Rickard). I do expect for this team to improve.

5. (4) South Walton- 15th in the Elite Race at Pre States. With the front two at Pre State running well, If the number 1 runner can get back on track this team will continue to make strides. Big shout out to Norton for stepping up.

6. (7) Cocoa Beach-a top 5 finish in the elite race, and I believe probably would have finished top 15 in the elite race under the same conditions. I can't really put my finger on it, but I really like this team.

7. (5)  Lake Highland Prep- Respectable 17th in the elite race, but with only one runner hitting a season best. They did have a faster team time than Cocoa, but race conditions do differ. It's close between the two teams.

8. (8) Astronaut- 9th at Pre State in the select race. If the pack can move up just slightly this team can esily move up.

9.(10)  Titusville- Just narrowing out Rockledge in the select race. It will be interesting to see how District 2A13 plays out with the top 5 in the district, likely to be ranked top ten in the state when the state series comes around.

10. (9)  Lake Wales- Stafford is keeping this team above water right now with his amazing performances.

11. (15)  Rockledge

12. (11)  Immokalee

13. (12)  Tavares

14. (13) West Florida Tech

15.(14)  Bishop Moore

3A Boys Late Season Rankings

by Kerry Mowlam, Ponte Vedra High School, kmowlam@yahoo.com

Team Rankings:

Commentary: All I can say is that I love this time of year. Races are getting very competitive and athletes are getting faster. Next Rankings will be by Regions so can get good feel of who is in the running (pad pun) to make States

Rank. School (Previous Rank) - Comments

1. Ocala Vanguard HS (1) -- They hold tight grip on top spot. Took easy stroll in the past race and starting the post season training preparation.

2. Chiles -- (2) Easy race at Lake City followed by huge race and results at Great American. What a force and team each year.

3. Belen Jesuit (3) -- Took top honors at FSU PreState and looked like a team on a mission. A few places from any runner will have them podium bound back at Tally in November

4. Creekside (5) -- I love it when I can say "told you so". Moved up every rankings with excellent race at PreState leaping over Niceville and keeping Estero at bay.

5. Estero -- (6) 8th at PreState in very competitive field has them sneaking up one place. Been and will continue to be in mix for rest of the season.

6. Fort Myers (7) -- 1 second behind Estero at PreState gets them one spot behind them in rankings. Been, what I feel as quiet yet dominant team all season long. Moving up the rankings with consistent performances

7. New Smyrna Beach (7) -- Very strong performances in back to back weeks at flrunners and PreState. Top 3 are forging head and giving this team a great post season chance.

8. Niceville (4) -- Overall 3A virtual has them at 4th but fell slightly only due to the PreState race. But with 36 sec split there, and few secs faster and back to 4th place they go. That's how tight these top teams are.

9. Gulf Coast (8) -- Staying steady even though top runner took it easy at flrunners and then not racing at PreState. But this team will be a post season force

10. Bartram Trail (10) -- what a surprise (no, not at all). BT have a tight pack running group and are top 10 in the State. And cementing their place with their effort at PreState

11. Robinson HS (9) -- Good race at PreState, but as said before, few seconds slower than last few races and they unfortunately slide 2 places. Don't worry as they will be ready come Districts and beyond

12. Naples (13) -- Staying steady with team effort at Disney last weekend after hard effort at flrunners. Been very solid all season to date and don't see that changing

13. Ponte Vedra (15) -- Great race at PreState Select race would have put them in the middle of Elite results. Good step up the rankings but Region 1 always comes down to mere seconds to get to State race

14. Fort Walton Beach (12) -- Win at flrunners Invitational followed by another amazing team split of 15 secs, yep 15 secs at PreState. Formidable group working their way thru the field at races, and holding advantage on that final 6th spot in Region 1

15. Lincoln (14) -- Missed their 3rd runner at PreState but throw him back in and they are right back where they should be. Every point will count in Region 1 to determine if they go to States or be at home watching

Teams on the Top 15 bubble trying to pop it….

Osceola (Seminole), Seabreeze, Choctawhatchee, Gulf Breeze, Stanton Prep, Harmony, Land O Lakes, Nease, Columbia, Venice, Barron Collier, Pace, Viera,

Individual Rankings:

Commentary: Gentlemen, start your engines

4. Diego Lavieri-Sosa 12 (4) - Ocala Vanguard -- Few easy weeks but holds steady

5. Matthew Newland 12 -- (7) Chiles -- can't argue with 15.50 at Great American

6. Aidan O'Gorman 11 (5) - New Smyrna Beach -- Mr Consistency strikes again with 2 results in 2 weeks

7. Hugh Brittenham 11 (6) -- Estero -- 3 secs ahead of Aiden at flrunners, 1 sec behind at PreState.
