Thomas Continues Torrid Stretch With Another School Record

Final Results | Friday's Recap

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Third straight meet. Third straight school record for Jared Thomas.

The University of South Florida sophomore topped his school best in the discus for the third time in USF's first three outdoor meets of the season during the third and final day of action in the FSU Relays Saturday at the Mike Long Track.

Thomas threw 193-6 in Tallahassee to top the 185-4 he posted last week at the Bulls Invitational in Tampa. His mark from the Relays is a potential top-10 national mark and would have put him in the top-10 at the end of the 2009 outdoor season.

On the day, USF's track and field teams added several more top-5 finishes, including a win by Thomas and junior Antillio Bastian in the triple jump, after a successful first full day of action Friday when the Bulls won four different events.

Thomas originally set the school record last year as a freshman with a heave of 181-2, then topped it in the first meet of the 2010 season, the USF Open, by covering a distance of 182-3, before last week's throw.

Senior teammate Tyler Perkins captured second place at the Relays behind Thomas after he launched the discus 169-6.

A leap of 49-3.75 for Bastian gave him the top overall finish in the triple jump, as he came up less than six inches short of his season best.

After a good portion of the field failed to clear a height jumping into a strong wind, freshman Wyatt Metzger took second in the pole vault and just edged out his PR at 15-7.25.

Senior Kayla Richmond punched her ticket to the BIG EAST Championships in the 400 hurdles after running 1:03.54 to finish fifth overall. Not far behind her was junior Rachel Etienne, whose 1:04.19 put her in eighth but fell just 0.05 seconds short of the conference qualifying time.

Sophomore Marcus Hicks grabbed third in the men's shot put on the heels of a throw of 44-7.5, while freshman decathlete Neamen Wise went 41-9.25 as well.

Sophomore Shaniel Chambers ran a 2:13.13 as she placed third in the 800 meters, while on the men's side, senior Ryan Courtoy upped his personal best in the 800 meters by running 1:53.04.

Competing in her first meet of the outdoor season, freshman Dariel Jackson qualified for the conference championships in the 100 after running 12.14 to put her in 10th overall among a field of 40. A time of 25.21 for Jackson in the 200 meters in the face of a strong headwind that blew throughout the first part of the day put her in ninth among a field of more than 40 athletes.

Senior Samantha Shade and junior MaShonda Rayner went 7-8 in the triple jump, with Shade leaping 38-8.25 and Rayner posting a new PR at 37-7.25.

In the 4x400 relay, the quartet of Chambers, Richmond and freshmen Deloria Jackson and Rachael James had the best time of the season so far for the Bulls with a 3:55.82. The same went for the men, as Courtoy, senior Greg Fontus, sophomore David Aristil and freshman Pascal Orelus combined to run 3:14.58 to come in fifth.

USF will stay in-state and head to Gainesville next week for the Florida Relays Friday and Saturday.
