3A Girls Rankings:

Commentary: So what is new after the first full week of the cross country season? The top 10 have not changed a whole lot. Lakewood Ranch and Chiles are going to be neck and neck the whole season. Looking forward to their head-to-head at Pre-State in a preview of their forthcoming state meet showdown. There are a number of schools not far behind- namely FWB and Niceville, which boasts 4 of their top 6 runners as freshman. A lot of good head-to-head matchups took place this past weekend at UF Mountain Dew Invitational, Wildcat Invitational, and Katie Caples. There are also a host of schools that did not make the top 15 that are on my "watch list". Those schools are, in no particular order: King, Vanguard, Harmony, Naples, Charlotte, Bartram Trail, Viera, Oviedo, Osceola, and Gulf Coast. They would be in my unofficial top 25.

Commentary: So the first full week of Cross Country season has passed and there have been some new and impressive performances by both teams and individuals. While it's still very early on, it appears that Lourdes and Plant are holding strong; after that there looks to be a lot of team shifting throughout the season. Also, Region 3 needs to step it up with some more big meet performances! Other than the top 3 teams, everyone else has basically been in hiding, but we should hopefully see a few this weekend at Spanish River.

I tried to place the most emphasis on head-to-head results, but that might not always workout when comparing multiple performances.

3A Boys Rankings:
By: David Gardner, Timber Creek HS- david.gardner@ocps.net

Team Rankings:
Team Name, Region -  (Prev.)  Comments:
1. BELEN JESUIT (MIAMI) # 1 REGION 4 (2) The Wolverines were obviously not too happy about their 2nd place ranking preseason week.  They proved to everyone at Gainesville they're the team to beat in 3A, however if it wasn't for the fab freshman Magoulas this team would be dead even with Charlotte.  You know what I said about a foot race in the end...
2. CHARLOTTE  (PUNTA GORDA)  # 1 REGION 3 (1) After a subpar performance in the muddy waters at FACA, the fighting Tarps swam their way back into contention at The Dew.  They need a strong showing from their 4-5 to give Belen a run in the end.  It’s a long season…
3. BOOKER T. WASHINGTON (PENSACOLA)# 1 REGION 1 (4) I guess rankings on paper don't lie…the only thing stopping this group from securing the Top spot is a #1 punch and a stronger #5.  A 16:42 AVG at the Wildcat Invite makes them viable contenders in Dade City this year.
4. LEON (TALLAHASSEE) # 2 REGION 1 (3) Leon's seniors are on the prowl early, but Stafford desperately needs to find his pride if Leon's hopes for a 4-Peat are in order.  With the lowest 1-5 split, if the Lions improve together the TOP 3 are easy prey.
5. FORT WALTON  BEACH (FT. WALTON BCH) # 3 REGION 1 (6) The Boys from FWB just edged out a determined Niceville crew last week at the Wildcat Invite.  The problem for them right now is the lack of frontrunners, however if Dearmon and Ammons set sail, the Vikes ship may be too far away for teams to catch this year.
6. NICEVILLE (NICEVILLE) #4 REGION 1 (13) The Eagles have gone from naughty to "Nice" in one quick week.  It doesn't hurt when you bring in two stud freshman (Howell and Morken) who fill your Top 5.  Experience will be the key question as The 'Ville moves forward, but with a solid amount of depth the sky is the limit for this squad.
7. WIREGRASS RANCH (WESLEY CHAPEL)  # 1 REGION 2 (5) The Ranch had high hopes for this season, but with the mysterious set back to Pulsifer the journey to the TOP 5 has been halted…for now.  This squad could still stampede come State time.  As long as they keep the herd together and Riley keeps leading a State title could be in the reigns.
8. CHILES (TALLAHASSEE)  #5 REGION 1 (7) The Wolves "One man wolf pack" is still going strong, although the recent surge of Seniors Sutton and Vannoy have lightened the load for their younger pups. Buzzard is still the Alpha for Chiles, but needs to lead his 4-5 to better results if this pack wants a taste of the Top 5 this year.
9. LAND O LAKES (LAND O LAKES) # 2 REGION 2 (18) Is it really any surprise that Coach K has another stacked squad?  Get ready for these guys to play the underdog all year, but I think this group doesn't mind.  The Gators just keeping on getting better and it won't stop until Dade City.  The emergence of two solid freshman means this group could make a run for Top 5 honors in the end.
10. BARTRAM TRAIL (ST. JOHNS) # 6 REGION 1 (12) Big Brother Bartram is the last one in from the Region of Torture.  Unfortunately for Creekside they are left at home again to hear about how Jimmy "did his thang".  The Trail have a solid 1-2 punch, but will need their 3,4,5 to step up if they want to avoid a nail biting finish at Region.
11. FT. MYERS (FT. MYERS) # 2 REGION 3 (11)
12. NATURE COAST TECH (BROOKSVILLE) # 3 REGION 2 (19)
13. ST. CLOUD (ST. CLOUD) #2 REGION 4 (14)
14. CREEKSIDE (ST. JOHNS) # 7 REGION 1, OUT OF STATE CHAMP.  (10)
15. GEORGE JENKINS (LAKELAND) # 4 REGION 2 (NR)
16. NAVARRE (NAVARRE) #8 REGION 1,  OUT OF STATE CHAMP (17)
17. RIDGEVIEW (ORANGE PARK) # 9 REGION 1, OUT OF STATE CHAMP. (NR)
18. OVIEDO (OVIEDO) # 5 REGION 2 (20)
19. OCALA VANGUARD (OCALA)  #10 REGION 1, OUT OF STATE CHAMP. (8)
20. LINCOLN (TALLAHASSEE) # 11 REGION 1, OUT OF STATE CHAMP. (NR)

Individual Rankings:
Athlete Name, Grade – Team (Prev.)  Time, Comments:
1.  Jimmy Clark, Creekside  (1) He's still Superman in 3A.  With a 15:18 at Katie Caples, I'm likely to believe the speeding bullet loses this race.
2.  Elliot Clemente, Belen Jesuit  (2) A 15:30 at The Dew is still just short of Clark's Kryptonite.
3.  Tyler Cardillo, Charlotte  (5) My dark horse of the season is now riding into the light after a stellar performance at The Dew
4.  Will Bridges, Edgewater  (10) He's Back…Bridges is healthy and ready to "Draw" himself closer to the TOP 3
5.  Alex Foss, George Jenkins (18) Domo Arigato... No assembly required for this Robot…Foss may be Boss this year.
6.  Kamal Korso, Terry Parker (3) The fact that he has no results can't keep Korso out of the TOP 10 unless an injury has surfaced
7.  Joseph Lindsay, Belen Jesuit (12) Lindsay gets the lucky 7th spot here, edging out Schnulle by 3/100 of a second.  The team title may come down to just that.
8.  Ryan Schnulle, Charlotte (NR) I told you I wasn't crazy, with the help of Schnulle Charlotte is a legit contender for the State Title.
9.  Jacob Kotick, Booker T. Washington  (NR) Not the Wildcat you were expecting here, a 16:22 to open the season makes Kotick a contender.
10.  Quincy O' Connor, Celebration  (NR) A Manhattan Mystery??? Does this new kid on the block have "The Right Stuff"…we will see.
11.  Taylor Buzzard, Chiles (NR) 16:28 at Katie Caples
12.  Anthony Borrego, Charlotte (NR) 16:32 at Mountain Dew
13.  Peter Fricke, Booker T. Washington (9) 16:32 at Wildcat Invite
14.  Riley Doherty, Leon (4) 16:33 at Carrollton Invite
15.  Harsha Torke, Viera (7) 16:39 at a slow Astronaut Invite
16.  Thomas Arnold, Booker T. Washington (NR) 16:33 at Wildcat Invite
17.  Ian Bordelon, Booker T. Washington (20) 16:33 at Wildcat Invite
18.  Josh Reilly, Wiregrass Ranch (NR) 16:34 at Mitchell Invite
19.  John Hazelton, Leon (19) 16:38 at Carrollton Invite
20  Kolby Watson, Ridgewood (NR) 16:40 at Mitchell Invite

Team Rankings:
  Team Name -  (Prev.)  Comments:
1. Columbus (1) They have a chance to show they are the all class Florida  #1 with a trip to Great American but only time will tell
2. Colonial (5) You have to love those young guns so far, they seem to be the only team that can make a move on Columbus
3. Dr. Phillips (2)  They will get their chance to really make a statement in Alabama at SE Showdown.
4. HB Plant (3) It took one week to get the vultures off their backs after FACA.Plant will not stay down for long, look for them to have a good showing at flrunners.
5. John I Leonard (4) Pickering and Charles makes John I Leonard a threat and the darkhorse every Race.
6. Winter Park (9) That was quite a bounce back performance from FACA. All those ready to bury the Park might want to put the shovels back in the garage. They're just fine and I see them moving into the top 5 before its all over
7. Buchholz (NR) Surprise, surprise. Chris Godwin has been running impresive, making them the early-season surprise.
8. Spruce Creek (11) This was another surprise team opening up the season big with a win over Hagerty at Astronaut Invite
9. Boone (7) You want proof of value with John Logan Hines this team can finish in the top 5 without him they could fall out of the top 10.
10. Hagerty (NR) They've already taken major steps forward in this program to be a top 10 team and It seems its going to be that kind of season.

Okay granted that Miami Northwestern is never taken into consideration for Cross Country however if you are going to do a ranking based on times you should look at everyone:

Miami Northwestern Senior HIgh School - Miami Central Rocket Invitational - September 16, 2010:

    Altoneice Williams 19:17.79

Which based on the rankings for the 4A that would put her perhaps in the top 5 five for the "FACA Pollster's Offical Rankings for the 4A Individual Rankings?????

Not sure what the basis of these rankings are and perhaps you can explain, but if you are going to say it is official then we need to keep everyone into consideration!

@skyblue As was stated earlier, yes, the course was short. It was at maximum, probably 3 miles. Either that or all of the girls all Pr'ed by at least a minute in the first week of the season. But that's highly unlikely.

Now I did rank them team wise and they're obviously in better shape than in years past; but I'll need to see an actual 5k performance before I can rank them alongside everyone else evenly.

Cypress has only run in tuesday meets as of yet, they will be at Optimist this Saturday though to post their first results of the season. BTW Congrats to Jeff Estero #1 Boys and Girls Team in 2A. Must be something in the water...

@CoachJanson I ranked them based off of the first week's results from the official season. I did not use their jamboree times in the ranking. Realistically they're a top 5 team even on a bad day once they're healthy. But until they pull it together in an actual HS race, I felt other teams that ran better deserved a higher ranking for this past week.

    @CoachRaposo

Okay, I have been looking into this further. I saw on the Flrunner page for this meet that it indicated that "The race length was 3 miles" Now who put that there? The registration for this meet in Direct Athletics is a 5K Run. John Rolle has confirmed that this was 5K run. If it's all based on a notation put on the meet page of Flrunners then that sounds a little fishy to me. So I would appreaciate a GREAT EXPLANATION FOR THIS AND I WOULD LIKE CONFIRMATION FROM AN OFFICIAL FROM THE MEET THAT THESE GIRLS RAN 3 MILES BECAUSE IT WAS VERY MUCH THEIR AND THE COACHES INTENTIONS THAT THEY WERE ENTERING AND RAN A 5K RACE.
  • KBrnnr / 4 Years Ago
    @Skyblue,

From experience, even if the meet were annotated as a 5k, that would not change Coach Raposo's opinion of the distance. Thus, the rankings would not change.

Here is my advice as far as rankings are concerned:

Don't get wrapped up in them. They are just one person's opinion. Some people waste wayyyy too much energy on worrying about whether or not rankings are justified. I understand it is nice to get the credit you work so hard for, but at the end of the year, none of this matters. There have been numerous instances when teams ranked 4th-5th or lower in the state have used "unjust" rankings as a motivation to go out there and win state. So, if you believe you or your team were ranked too low....print out the rankings and post em on your fridge for motivation!!
  • skyblue / 4 Years Ago
    @KBrnnr

Thank you for the comment however I am would like an explanation about this being a 3 mile race vs 5K. I just looked at past meets ran at the same facility and I saw that in 2001 CC Regionals for the 4A Region 4 was entered with Flrunners as 3 mile race. How is it that you can run a 3 mile race for an official race for FHSAA qualifications for Cross Country State Championship such as regionals which is clearly defined as a 5K race and entered with flrunners as a 3 mile run????????? That would make you inelgible to qualify for State wouldn't it? Not to mention I saw a posting for Isel Ramos in 2004 at post a time at this same facility and flrunners has it entered as a 5K race!

And, yes. I would like to see people get their recognition where it is due!

@skyblue First, read my reply to your other post here:
    fl.milesplit.com/discussion/topics/77958

Secondly, prior to 2002, the race length for Cross Country in the state of Florida was a 3 mile race. So, um, yeah...

So, um yeah ........prior to 2002, well go look at the posting after 2002, 5K so therefore it's a 5K course. You are so unprofessional. If you even cared about the concerns of some of the athletes you would come up with a more concrete response or educate us on some factual information from someone we can respect! I'll do my own homework on this course and I will get my information from facts and sound minded, concerned individuals. Not from a person who I believe is not highly respected in the track & field world! And, as I said "who I believe is not highly respected"

@skyblue To quote a good friend of mine let me start by saying "I didn't know you spelled cross country as 't-r-a-c-k a-n-d f-i-e-l-d' ".

Next, that course was definitely not a 5k course. To lie to children and say otherwise is unprofessional. You're completely backwards in your thought process. Also, you don't even know who I am. So any attributions you have towards me wouldn't be a legitimate argument either. But if you want more factual information, let's try this one again.

Two top female athletes time comparisons:
    Girl #1-
    Thursday, 9/16/10- 20:04 @ Rocket @ Amelia Earhart, 2nd place
    Monday, 9/20/10- 22:32 @ Dual Meet @ Amelia Earhart?, 1st place
Saturday, 9/25/10- 21:23 @ Spanish River @ South County Regional

    Girl #2-
    Thursday, 9/16/10- 21:09 @ Rocket @ Amelia Earhart, 4th place
    Monday, 9/20/10- 21:58 @ Dual Meet @ Amelia Earhart?, 2nd place
Saturday, 9/25/10- 22:29 @ Spanish River @ South County Regional

And South County Regional is considered to be a faster course than Amelia Earhart.

If you still can't figure it out through LOGIC, then stick to track & field.

    @CoachRaposo

I think the problem I have with you is trying to understand who made you the judge. I do recall you making your decisions about how people should be chosen for All Dade!. The point is that we look to this site to report information as it is entered if you feel that as the Coaches registered to run in a meet and the kids are running in a meet entered as 5K and there is any discremencies to that then the process to correct it should be done in a professional manner not making notes on a meet because you said so. I don't care about your post time comparison I just find your way of doing things very unprofessional and there is a better way to go about this the way you have done so. I don't give a crap about your rankings.....and I don't want to be a part of a site that has a unprofssional person working for them. You are not a person who I respect and never will. I read about you all the time on this site and I never liked you from the day you used my daughter's name is one of your discussions to prove your negative points. It's tackey, disrepctful and low and that is what I think of you and you know what I will go to Track & Field!

@skyblue I'm glad you remembered that topic. Because lest we forget that you and I AGREED on that subject relating towards the all-county selections from a couple of years ago. Good job.

But again, don't use your unfounded bias about a sport that you know not of and pretend like you have a clue what is going on. Whether or not you don't like the REALITY of the situation doesn't matter, nor will it.

Finally, don't confuse negativity with reality. And once again, to lie to athletes saying that their performances were two minutes faster than they really are is the only unprofessional thing going on.

@skyblue You may not have respect for Ryan, but hopefully you have respect for me. You and I have dealt with each other enough over the years and you know that I've always been good and respectful to you, your daughter, and everyone else and try to do what's right.

The position that we are put in is keeping the integrity of the stats. And the way it was done is the policy. This site serves as the gatekeeper and we have to make decisions to ensure that there is a level of accuracy of our rankings. It is the reason why I will always feel like this site is better than one of the other sites out there that just lets coaches put in their stats with no gatekeeper.

    Four points...

    1) It really doesn't matter how the course was advertised. What matters is what it was. I have had two big blunders at my meet--both with the middle school race--over the years. In both cases I advertised it at two miles, but for things that got screwed up one year it was 2.1 and one year it was some where short like 1.7. In both cases I owned up to it, which is the right thing to do. But besides that I didn't have a choice because it was obvious from the times!

    2) If there is something that is close or debatable then I am going to go with what was advertised and give it the benefit of the doubt. I don't enjoy having to be the "bearer of bad news" so to speak. But in this case it was not close and it really is not debatable. Sure we have debated all day, but really seriously... it was not a 5K. It is completely obvious because it is not close.

    3) Hopefully the coaches of those teams were experienced enough in XC and would have told their runners immediately after the race that it probably wasn't really their new 5K PR... if they didn't do that then they are just hurting those kids because they will probably mostly not run those times again the rest of the year. And that is far worse and more hurtful to those kids.

    4) Finally... I have had to do the same thing occasionally in track. If we see a 100 meter race come out where everyone mysteriously dropped .6 or more from their previous 100 meter PR... then it sets off warning signs. And I have had to make the decision to exclude them from the rankings because it's obvious SOMETHING happened in that race. Coaches have gotten mad at this too, but it's the right thing to do. And in the one case I'm thinking of specifically (involving Jeff Demps' sophomore year) the timer later confirmed to me that the wire got pulled out or some such thing and they had to go to hand at the last second.

It's the right thing to do.
  • cghswift / 4 Years Ago
@jason Good grief people! Is it possible to go and measure the course and find out what the distance really is? I remember that last year this site had several hundred responses to someone who thought that the Disney was short and FLRunners 5K was short and that the times were just too good.

And this goes to the process of measuring courses which we have gone on and on and argued about for page after page.

Ryan is brash. I love him because he is brutally honest. I would love to have Ryan coach my daughter. He has passion. I love a runner with passion.

Jason has passion. I think we all love and respect Jason for his great works.

ok so i have been a fan for years but this discussion made me sign up.

skyblue, you are very ignorant and stubborn. All they are trying to make you understand is the truth. The course IS NOT a 5k course and there is no reason for you to bash another coach on this website, especially when you dont even know the guy.

    2. so here i am reading the 4a boys rankings and i see jose esteves from columbus ranked about 4 spots ahead of dylan from coral reef. i was at spanish river and i definately saw dylan finish before estevez. then i see who was in charge of the rankings and it all made sense...typical columbus"

If you were a fan for years, you should know that the rankings were posted before the race and based on last week's performance, great job!
