Marvin Bracy Blasts Out of Cannon for National HS Record 55 Meter Dash
Marvin Bracy kicked the day off on a high note on Sunday morning when he laid down an incredible 6.08 55 Meter Dash. In addition to being a NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL RECORD it is the #1 time in the world indoors so far this year and only .08 seconds off the American Record.
Bracy told us in an interview two weeks ago that he is eyeing making the US Olympic Team in the 100 Meters this year. That is a feat that probably most considered somewhat unrealistic for a high school senior; however, by laying down that time in January--while he's still in the transition from football player to track athlete--there may be a few less doubters now. Certainly not that it's anything of a sure bet given the grueling nature of the Trials and the perfect execution necesary against professionals, but it starts to make the 9-point times that would be necessary to make the team seem a lot more probable.
The 55 Meter Dash is an event that is not especially common on the elite levels of the sport; however, the American Record of 6.00 was set way back in 1986 by Lee McRae, who was a three-time NCAA champ at the event.. in addition to a 100m NCAA and Pan Am Games golds and a gold at 60 meters at World Indoors in 1987.
In trying to predict what Bracy could likely do at 100 meters at this point, it is certainly hard and somewhat subjective to say. The conversion of 55 meters to 100 meters would have to take a lot of factors into consideration. It's a bit of black magic since the first 40 meters or so are essentially getting up to speed (accelerating from the start) and so only around 15 meters are at top speed. Bracy had fantastic reaction time in this one and anticipated the gun almost perfectly. Based on the video and when he finally popped up at top speed his 6.08 probably would look like a 6.60 through 60 meters and some where around 10.07 for 100 meters (using a 1.525 conversion from 60 meters to 100 meters). Of course outdoor you have other factors like wind and fatigue for the extra distance, but all things being equal that's probably a safe bet for where he is at physically right now. Get him a bit more into track shape rather than football shape and especially with a slight wind at the back this young man could be seeing 9.9s this year if he executes perfectly.

Shayla Sanders Etches Her Name on Top of Two Events Nationally
Not to be outdone, Boyd Anderson's Shayla Sanders wanted to be sure that she inserted her name into the national conversation and she did in a big way. The senior started the day of with a US #1 in the 55 Meter Dash, scorching a 6.85 that besated Myasia Jacobs of New Jersey's national leading 6.87 in the national rankings. She came back later in the day and absolutely dominated the rest of the country with a stellar 23.89 that topped national leader Aaliyah Brown of Illinois by a stunning .45 seconds in the national rankings. In fact, the time would have been #1 at the conclusion of the 2011 season as well.
It is the second fastest time we have on record at the distance indoor for a Floridian, with only Olympic gold medalist Sanya Richards having gone faster (23.22 in 2002).
Teammate Kali Davis-white was second to Sanders in both of those events with a 24.67 and 6.96, respsectively.

Arman Hall Doubles in 200, 400
St. Thomas Aquinas star Arman Hall is the defending world champ in the 400 Meters after willing IAAF World Youth Championship in France last summer. He kicked off his 2012 campaign with a double-victory indoors at 200m and 400m at Jimmy Carnes. His times of 48.81 and 21.61 were top ten nationally so far this winter season.
Avery Lopez Sweeps Distance
Belen Jesuit junior Avery Lopez swept the two longer distance events of the day. He pulled out an 8:53.46 in the 3000 meters over a tough challenge from Holy Trinity's Daniel Moore (8:4.76) and a couple of out-of-staters. Earlier in the day, he won the mile race with relative ease in 4:31.78.

Georgia's Tinkey Wins 3000, Davidson Second in 10:19
Georgia's Grace Tinkey, who was third at Foot Locker Nationals in December, won the 3000 Meter Run in her first indoor race ever with a 10:04.19.
Shelby Davidson was second in that race. The Cocoa Beach senior kept ahead of Bryce Seymour with a 10:19.26 to 10:20.22. Holy Trinity freshman Julie Wollrath was just four second behind Seymor, which gave her the win in the 15-16 division.

Sophomore Sergeant Soars to 11-6 Clearance
Lake Mary sophomore Erica Sergeant is off to a great start. Competing in the 15-16 division, she beat even the senior 17-19 class with a clearance of 11 feet, six inches in the pole vault. That mark is already equal to her state meet performance last season that earned her the bronze. It is seven inches off her personal best of 12-1 last summer. Things are looking up for her this season... literally.
Teixeira Opens 2012 With 1:55
Lake Brantley senior Otniel Teixeira announced last week in an in-studio interview at flrunners.com/MileSplit headquarters that he had verbally committed to USF. This weekend he headed up to the University of Florida, another school that showed a lot of interest in the middle distance star, and he showed them all just why he's gained so much interest from D1 schools. He laid down a 1:55.74 indoors to open his 2012 season with a bang, winning by over four seconds over Mario Ojeda.
Georgia's Williams Sails to 22-11 Long Jump
West Laurens High junior Keandre Williams hit a 22-11 whopper of a long jump to beat out Kendal Williams of Jacksonville by over a foot. The Georgian tied his previous personal best in his first-ever indoor meet.
Freeman Wins Girls Long Jump in 18-10
FSU signee De'renae Freeman of West Orage won the long jump in an impressive early season 18-10.25.
Daeshon Gordon Nation's Top Soph at 55H
Continuing the Boyd Anderson domination of the short stuff, Lady Cobra Daeshon Gordon hit an 8.27 out of the first heat to win the 15-16 girls division and easily the fastest girls hurdle time on the day. The time was good enough for the top twenty nationally this indoor season, but it is also the top time in the nation for a sophomore. Bright future!

Frosh Erin Ford Leads Pack in Girls 400
Royal Palm Beach freshman Erin Ford made her high school track debut count. The defending middle school state champion in the event ran a US #15 time of 56.76 out of heat 16 to clock the fastest overall time today. Deja Parrish of American Heritage was there to push her in the same heat to finish second in the heat and second fastest of any division with a 57.23. Ford, now the top freshman at 400m in the country, should be an instant force on the larger outdoor track this spring. She ran a 56.02 last year and taking out the extra curves in this one she is at least there already to start 2012.
