On-Site Coverage

Girls Highlights

  • Perhaps the most impressive performance of the meet though was eighth-grader Dominique Turner of Greenwood Lakes Middle, who turned in a stunning 5-6 in the high jump. That is a height most high school girls would find enviable. That is a full six inches higher than the #1 performance from a middle school athlete in Florida last season! Look out! Turner also won the 55 Meter Hurdles over high school competition in 8.59 to go along with other strong performances in the 200 and 300.
  •  Dr. Phillips freshman Teahna Davis had a solid opening meet with a win in the 55 Meter Dash in 7.23, which she followed up by second place in the 200 with a 25.95. Video Interview
  • Trading off 1-2 with her in those two races was West Orange senior DeRenae Freeman who took the 200m in 25.87, but settled for 7.34 behind Davis in the 55. Freeman, who is more of a long jump specialist typically, also nothced a win in the 300 meters in 40.68.
  • Erica Sergeant of Lake Mary nailed a 12-0 to win the pole vault by a long shot, which was six inches better than Jimmy Carnes a few weeks ago and matches her best heights from the end of the season last year. Inteview from Jimmy Carnes
  • Junior Abby Hani of Lake Mary Prep had a nice opening long jump for the season with a 17-5.75 win and two third place showings in the 200 and 55. Video Interview
  • Victoria Goodwin of Northside Christian won the triple in 33-9 and showed diversity by adding two silvers in the 600 (1:45) and 55H (9.09).
  • Harmony senior Kendall Pollock was just shy of her discus personal best with a 108-6.

Boys Highlights

  • Angel Coburn, the senior from West Orange, went gold-gold-silver with 34.70 and 22.54 wins in the 300 and 200, respectively, and a 6.82 for second place in the 55.
  • Middle school cross country champ and Avalon Middle eighth grader Brandon Marquez hit two personal bests with a 4:24 win at 1500 and a 9:37 for third place in the 3K.
  • Winter Springs senior Clint Christ nailed a huge new best with a 6-4 opening win in the high jump, which is his first time we have on record for even clearning 6-0!
  • Colonial High School senior Erik Knott improved his personal high water mark with a 14-0 pole vault win.
  • East River senior Jose Santana earned a gold and two silvers with a 6.74 win at 55 meters and two runner-up performances in the 200 (22.98) and 300 (35.32). Video Interview
