Scouting Reports: Providence Girls

Providence proved it was the best team in all of 1A last year when they won the Cross Country Finals at Little Everglades Ranch. This year the team looked poised to possibly repeat as champions until their number one runner decided to transfer for her freshman year. Danielle Van Liere who finished sixth last year as an 8th grader has switched schools to Fletcher. The good news for Providence coach Jeanie Jackson is that four of her top five return for 2012. It's a very experienced group as well. Junior Eden Meyer has the top returning time of 19:17.30 with fellow junior Emily Stallings a minute behind at 19:18.31. Meyer and Stallings finished 10th and 26th respectively. Placing in between them was one of two senior returners Camille Jackson who finished 13th. Senior Danielle Dunn who holds the school record for 5K and multiple events on the track will also be a key component of this team.

Dunn might not have had the state final performance she had hoped for finishing 56th, but make no mistake about it, the senior has speed. Name a distance event and she holds the school record for it. A distance relay school record? She was a member of those too. This outdoor season she finished second in the 800 with a very impressive time of 2:15.31. Camille Jackson was 10th in that race and Emily Stallings 16th. Stallings was 5th in the 1600 with a time of 5:09.69. Eden Meyer was 8th in the 3200. Meyers, Jackson, Stallings , and Dunn combined for a third place finish in the 4x800 meter relay.

These girls have been running together for several years. They lose a huge piece of the puzzle in Danielle Van Liere so the question for Providence will be depth. Who will step up in the six and seven spots and how can these top five push each other? 1A is always competitive with the likes of Oak Hall, Holy Trinity, Maclay, and even Trinity Prep and this year will be no exception.

Coach Jackson Says...

"The girls are going to have to step it up this year, and each runner will have to improve for us to have a chance to finish in the top three. Katie Messer will join us this season.  "It will be her first year running cross country, but I think she will be a positive addition to our team."

"Two meets we are particularly gearing up for are the FSU meet because that's where the Florida State Cross Country Championship will be held, and Alligator Lake because that is where our regional meet will be."

"Our goals for 2012 are, of course, to be a better and more mature team than in 2011. Also, we would really like to have more runners come out so that we have a larger team."
