In Her Own Words: Stefanie Kurgatt

I would like to start off by saying what an AMAZING weekend of running the state of Florida just had! There were some great races put on and incredible performances to go along with them. So, I was not there to witness any of the races but Flrunners really had quite the showing. Congrats to Emily Edwards for running a strong race and placing first with a new personal best. All the ladies in that race had very respectable times and should be pleased! Another big congrats to Carlos Miranda for not only grabbing the win, but also his BEASTLY 15:07! I would love to see that “Club 15” become “Club 14” very soon. Lead the way Carlos.

The Maclay crew traveled not too far from home this weekend. We competed in Thomasville, Georgia at a race called Quail Trail. Everyone as always worked together and raced their hearts out. Our boy’s team had an excellent showing, placing first overall. Captain Travis Covert cruised to a first place finish and we had a total of four boys in the top ten. Go Marauders! On the girls side our top finisher was Elizabeth Santoro placing third and the other ladies worked together finishing all within a minute of each other. This coming weekend is the highly awaited FSU invitational/Pre-State at the ARP. It is quite exciting to have this amazing park as the state course this year. It is even better for us because it is at home. Hopefully we will have a lot of support coming from Tallahassee. Even though I will not be running this weekend, I am still excited for the team. I know everyone will do amazing.

Cross training has been going well so far. Time is actually going by faster than I thought and I do not have much longer to go. I have already begun to notice a difference in many areas. My injury has a lot to do with the fact that I lack some range of motion and strength in certain areas. Every day I work on bettering my range of motion in my ankles and hips with various stretches and exercises. My core and hip strength has definitely improved, and I must say I do not despise pushups anymore. Also, since I have been water running like crazy, I have found myself having to push harder because my quads and hamstrings have gotten stronger and used to the motions. I am still sore every day, which is awful when waking up, but the key is mental toughness. I know I can’t give up! School, put together with all this cross training, has kept me busier than ever. I still have some official visits left and am very excited.

That is it for now, best of luck to everyone this weekend.  Quick shout out to my best friend Carly Thomas. She recently ran a personal best of 17:35. Love you girl. Keep it up.

As always,
Happy Running and God Speed
