Sarasota's Bernard heading to FGCU

Sarasota High senior runner Courtland Bernard verbally committed to run cross country for Florida Gulf Coast University in Fort Myers.

A captain for the sailors cross country team, Bernard ran a personal best at the North Port Invitational, finishing the 5k (3.1-mile) course in 15 minutes, 58 seconds. He finished 18th at the Class 3A State Cross Country Meet at Apalachee Regional Park in Tallahassee in 16:03, helping the Sailors to a fourth-place finish. He also was invited to run in the Foot Locker South Regional in Charlotte, N.C., finishing 115th in 16:13.

The signing day for cross country athletes is Feb. 6.
