Boyd Anderson star Shayla Sanders capped off her senior season with three gold medals at the 4A State Finals. Sanders won the 100 (11.63), 200 (23.64) and was the anchor leg on the team's winning 4x100 meter relay. Her 30 point contribution led the Lady Cobras to their first ever team championship. For her performances at the state meet and throughout the season she was  featured in Sports Illustrated's Faces In The Crowd section which highlights top athletes in the prep and college rankings from across the nation.

A year after competing in the Sunshine State, Pine Forest alum Darroneshia Lott and Wekiva alum Jovan Davis are representing host South Plains College in Texas at the NJCAAA Nationals.

The regular season is over and only the NCAA Championships are left for NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field. Preliminary rounds for the national championships will be held next weekend, May 24-26, and the final rounds will be held June 6-9 in Des Moines, Iowa. Olivia Ortiz was at the peak of her high school career. The Lakewood Ranch junior had captured a cross country state title and was capping off the year with a great run outdoors with a championship in the 4x800 meter relay, and a runner up finish in the 1600 meters, before the injury bug struck. Ortiz fell to the track with 50 meters left in the 3200 meters. The diagnosis a broken femur. In an flrunners exclusive she shares with us what happened in that moment, the surgery following, how she is holding up now.

Nova senior Monique Griffiths capped off her senior season as a state champion. Griffiths won the discus with a throw of 140-5 at the 4A State Finals. Now with her high school season behind her, she is ready to embark on the next stage of her track and field career at California State University-Northridge.

 First Lady Michelle Obama today joined U.S. athletes, including Team USA track stars Bernard Lagat, Lashinda Demus, Wallace Spearmon and LaShawn Merritt, to announce a nationwide commitment to get more than 1.7 million American children active as part of her Let’s Move! initiative to solve the problem of childhood obesity.  (via USA Track & Field)

Cocoa Beach senior Shelby Davidson won a state championship in cross country and followed it up with one more state title in track and field. Davidson won the 3200 meters at the 2A State Finals. In addition to being a standout on the track and cross country course, she is also a stellar performer in the classroom, and in the community. For this she was recently awarded two scholarships.

The No. 18 UCF track and field team won its third-straight Conference USA Outdoor Championship on Sunday to become just the third team in the league to ever accomplish a three-peat. (via UCFAthletics.com)

There wasn't a ton of action across the state, but several middle schoolers got their chance to shine, as well as a postseason meet on the coast for a chance to get some season ending PR's. Check it all out in our Week In Review.

Our 100x100 Team Rankings take the top 100 individual and relay performances and assign each team a score to crown the strongest, deepest teams in the state. Miami Northwestern eeked out a close one over St. Thomas Aquinas and Boyd Anderson, 2034-1915-1847.

The state championships are over and that means the postseason has arrived. Holy Trinity is hosting an all-star meet this weekend with some of the top distance runners in attendance. Todd and Jason preview the event and break down each race.

Sanya Richards is the kind of track athlete that can put a college program on the map and in the hunt for a national title. When Richards was coming out of Fort Lauderdale's St. Thomas Aquinas High a decade ago, everyone wanted her. Our 100x100 Team Rankings is an automated scoring system that takes the top 100 individuals and relay teams in the state and scores them. The result shows us who the deepest, strongest teams in the state are to conclude the 2012 season. St. Thomas Aquinas boys distanced themselves by a large margin over distant Colonial 2043-1250.

Calvary Christian High School seniors, Logan Thiel and Jessica Maggio, signed letters of intent to run track for Arkansas State University.

Boone speedster Marvin Bracy crossed the line at the 4A State Finals with another gold medal in the 100 meter dash. It was the grimmace on his face afteward that had the everyone wondering what had happened. The senior had injured his left hamstring and opted out of running the 200. Trainer Ricky Argro tells us more about what happened andn how it will effect Bracy's future plans.  

By my calculations WALCOTTV is the overall winner for 3A and FALCONTHROWER26 is the overall winner for 4A. There were a lot of great entries with 12 or 13 correct picks in 3A and 14 or 15 correct picks in 4A.

Boyd Anderson junior Kali-Davis White and Bartram Trail junior Nick Uruburu are this week's Warrior of the Week winners. Davis-White finished runner-up in both the 100 and 200 meter dash at the 4A State Finals, as well as being a member of the state championship 4x1 team. Her 26 point contribution was a major factor in the Lady Cobras winning their first state title in school history. Uruburu took home gold in the 400 with a blistering US#6 time of 46.75 and followed that up with a gold in one of the most exciting races all season as he came from behind in the 4x400 and propelled Bartram Trail to the 3A team title.

Several days after anchoring the Lakewood Ranch ladies to a state championship in the 4x800m relay senior Devin McDermott announced she will be running collegiately for the University of Florida. She says the recruiting process was definitely overwhelming, but at the end of the day she had to focus on what was going to benefit her most and which place just felt right.

 The Pensacola area will be well represented at Fridays Class 3A state track and field meet in Jacksonville.   

Freshman Octavious Freeman of UCF returns to The Bowerman Women’s Watch List the award’s watch list committee announced on Thursday. Freeman returns to the grand list of ten vying for the top award in collegiate track & field after tallying some of the best performances in the world this year in the 100 and 200 meters. This is Freeman’s second appearance on the watch list this season. (via thebowerman.org )

The penultimate event in NCAA Division I cross country is coming to Tallahassee for the first time in 2012 as Florida State has been selected as the host for the NCAA South Regional Cross Country Championships. Tallahassee has also submitted a bid with the Florida High School Athletics Association to host the 2012 state cross country championships at the ARP on November 17.

Gainesville High School sprinter Kadeidra Jackson is glad the recruiting process is over. No longer does she have to tell her peers what school is she going to. Jackson, a multiple state finals qualifier, says she knows where she will be making the next step, and that is the University of South Florida.

Saint Andrews eighth grader Nic Jacobsen is coming off a successful season running against high school competition. Now he is looking forward to his final Middle School State Meet against his fellow peers.

Dade Christian senior Aklesso Agama and Miami Jackson senior Robin Reynolds are this week's Warrior of the Week winners. Agama took two golds at the 1A State Finals winning the long jump (22-11.75) and triple jump (47-04.50). He was also a member of the fourth third place 4x1 relay team and runner-up 4x4 team. Reynolds became the winningest female track and field athlete picking up her 14th gold medal of her career. She won the long jump with a nation leading mark of 20-06.25, 100 (11.79), 400 (52.59), and lost in the 200 by a thousand of a second.

Ngoni Makusha was a diamond in the rough, a raw talent sprinting and long jumping in track meets in Zimbabwe. And while it’s nearly 8,000 miles away, Florida State track and field assistant coach Ken Harnden received a tip that there was a talented athlete that he should take a look at. (via fox sports )

Gulliver Prep senior Briana Pulido wrapped up her high school career at the 2A State Finals and is now looking forward to the next chapter of her life. Pulido recently committed to the University of Connecticut and Coach William Morgan. She says the Huskies were the complete fit for her.

Jones sprinter Levonte "Kermit" Whitfield received a surprise at his track practice when star Tyson Gay delivered the news that Whitfield would be invited to the prestigious Adidas Dream 100 in New York City.

Gulf Breeze junior Austin Droogsma and Rockledge sophomore Danielle Phillips our this week's Warrior of the Week winners. Droogsma picked up district championships in both the shot put and discus unleashing the implements 179-10 and 56-7. Both marks rank in the top three in the state. Phillips picked up three wins at the 2A Region 3 Championships by placing first in the long jump, triple jump and 100 hurdle. Her long jump of 19-11.5 is tops in the state and currently ranks sixth in the nation.

The 4A District schedule featured four meets, on three separate days (April 18-20), three of which occurred within (roughly) 40 miles of each other, hence this once-in-a-lifetime three-fer.

American Heritage is projected to sweep both state champsionships. Their girls are heavy favorites, but the boys will have a handful of teams breathing down their necks. Can they do it? Or will they let their girls have all the fun?

Based on the regional meets this week, we crunched the numbers of the qualifiers and got a preview of what's to come this Friday in Jacksonville from the 1A!

Jeff Adams braved the elements on Friday for the 3A District 6 meet at Brooksville Central High School. Weather postponed the meet until Monday. Complete results are now posted along with tons of photos from Jeff.

Can American Heritage boys make it two-for-two with their girls likely victory? Our virtual meet says it will be a much tighter battle with Astronaut, Miami Washington, Lakewood, and Lavonte Whitfield's Jones right there.

P.K. Yonge distance standout Jordan Brown is busy putting the finishing touches on a successful senior season. Coaches have taken notice of his performances and recently Brown made his college decision to attend Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale.

We already knew we had the BEST kids in the state competing in our sport. And we were already SO proud, but shoot! In reviewing the list of the FHSAA Academic All-State Team we see a lot of familiar names. In reviewing it more closely, we see that only two of the twenty-four total members do not count a track & field or cross country varsity letter to their credit. Pretty impressive.

Lakeland senior Josh McDaniel and Ferguson senior Natalie Concepcion our this week's Warrior of the Week winners. McDaniel cleared a new personal best and state leading vault of 15-6.00 to win the Brian Jaeger Classic. Concepcion proved her versatility for the Falcons by scoring points in four events. She won the 800 and 1600 meter runs, finished third in the long jump, and was a part of the schools' third place 4x4 team.

She didn’t sweep her events Wednesday, but Jackson’s Robin Reynolds looks like she can add to her record 11 state championships. (via The Miami Herald)

Dennis Mitchell is the head coach with Star Athletics at the National Training Center in Clermont, Florida.  Prior to coaching, he has won numerous medals at the Olympics and World Championships in both 100 meters and the 4×100 meter relay.(via SpeedEndurance.com)

Victor Arrieta was on site at Traz Powell Stadium providing some awesome images from the 3A District 16 meet in South Florida.

After throwing the discus 110 feet as a freshman, Apopka 's Jamal Whitaker sat down and watched YouTube videos. He studied how professional and collegiate throwers throw. He tried what he learned in practice, and at the Florida Relays in Gainesville in early April, he had a throw of 172 feet, 8 inches, good for first place. (via OrlandoSentinel.com)
