Holy Trinity's Kayla Hale (pictured above is the only Floridian to run at Foot Locker Nationals three times. The race in 2007 featured four Floridians (Brittany Koziara far left, meet champion Ashley Brasovan, and Emilie Amaro not pictured) Lyman athletes have made six trips between Teddy Mitchell, Nick Radkewich, and 2015 finalist Joshua Jacques. We breakdown all the Sunshine State history at this storied meet!

The road to sunny San Diego takes Sunshine State athletes through the South Regional and if they are able to escape the competition and finish in the top ten, a trip to the granddaddy of them all, the Foot Locker National Cross Country Championships. And who wouldn't want to go? The weekend is set to backdrop of the storied Hotel Del Coronado( Marilyn Monroe's "Some Like it Hot") and Balboa Park which has seen so many great high schoolers clash to earn bragging rights as the nation's top high school athlete.

Florida's history in the meet stems from the very beginning. Fresh off a stunning defeat of Basil Magee of Largo at the 1979 FHSAA 4A State Championships, Keith Brantly of Winter Haven finished second to Dwight Stephens of T.C. Williams(famed movie "Remember the Titans was based on this school) to qualify for the finals.  Basil Magee was sixth that year and also qualified. There is even a video with Keith (and I think Basil sitting next to him) in it on youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jI87ye5pew0 . He's the one at the beginning on the school bus 18 seconds into the video. Subsequent accomplished by Keith were a bronze medal at the World Junior Cross Country Championships in 1981, just 3 seconds out of first and with a cast on his hand which he hit on a post during the meet and a place on the 1996 US Olympic Team in the marathon. So maybe these nationals championships were a catalyst.

For the girls, Sandra Braasch of Orange Park was Florida's first qualifier. She finished sixth at the 1980 regional to earn her trip. Sandra was a member of the 9:03.42 4 x 800m relay team that won the USATF Jr. Olympics in 1983. Her sister, Sonja was on that team and they both ran for the University of Florida in college.

Floridians have had a lot of success in both genders in the 33 years of the  Southern regional meet- girls have won four times and the boys five times. In 1979 and 1980 there were five regions and seven qualifiers out of each.

We take a statistical look at those that advanced to Foot Locker Nationals over the meet's storied history!

So, you may be wondering, what Florida kid qualified the most times. Well here you go- a list of all the girls and boys qualifiers and the years they qualified.
