FLORIDA TRACK AND FIELD SIGNS 20 FOR 2012 CAMPAIGN

Gators add decorated class to already talented roster for upcoming season.


GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The University of Florida track and field program, on the heels of top-10 recruiting classes in 2011, has inked 20 student-athletes for the upcoming 2012 season, head coach Mike Holloway announced on Thursday.

“I'm incredibly excited about the men’s and women’s recruiting classes for the upcoming season,” Hollowaysaid. “Recruiting is the backbone of any program. No matter what we think of ourselves as coaches, we have to have the right athletes in our program to be successful.”

Holloway continued, “This group of young men and women gives us a chance to continue the success we have had here at the University of Florida in track and field and cross country. On behalf of the entire Florida track and field family, we're thrilled to welcome these athletes into the Gator Nation.”

Tyler Cardillo is a distance runner from Charlotte High School in Punta Gorda, Fla., where he ranked No. 8 nationally in the indoor mile.. Cardillo also was the 2011 FHSAA Class 3A State Champion in the boys 1,600m with a personal-best time of 4:11.27. He placed third at the New Balance Indoor Nationals with a personal-best time of 4:13.48. Cardillo’s other personal-best times include: 3:57.02 (1,500m), 9:33.99 (3,200m), 15:10.18 (5,000m), 1:53.15 (800m) and 4:13.48 (i-mile). He was a member of the 2010 FHSAA Class 3A State Championship 4x800m relay team that clocked a time of 7:44.44 to defend its title. His relay team also ran 7:30.31 at the 2011 New Balance as the second-fastest 4x800 in high school history. He also holds his school’s records in the 5,000m, mile, 4x800m and 4x400m.

Jimmy Clark is a distance runner from Creekside High School in St. Johns, Fla., where he claimed the 2011 FHSAA Class 3A State Championship in the 3,200m (9:20.32). Clark also was the runner-up in the 1,600m (4:11.83). He has clocked personal best times of 4:11.83 (1,600m), 9:05.39 (2 Miles) and 14:53.29 (5,000m). He is a multiple-time All-Country Track and Field Athlete and was the 2010 and 2011 St. Augustine Record County Boys Track and Field Athlete of the Year. Clark was the 2010 FHSAA Class 3A State Cross Country Champion.

Marquis Dendy is the nation’s No. 1 ranked long jumper and triple jumper and holds the all-time Delaware state record in both of those events both indoors and outdoors. A Middletown, Del., native, Dendy holds a personal-best triple jump mark of 52-7.50 and a personal-best long jump mark of 25-9.50. He was the 2010 New Balance Outdoor Triple Jump Champion, breaking the meet record in the event. Dendy competed at the 2010 World Junior Championships, placing eighth. He is the 2011 Delaware State Champion in the triple jump both indoors and outdoors and the long jump champion outdoors as well. He has won his state outdoor title in the triple jump in three consecutive seasons. His personal-best indoor long jump mark of 25-9.50 currently ranks third-best all-time in the nation in high school history. Dendy was named Delaware’s outstanding male indoor field athlete in 2011, by a vote of the state’s coaches. Dendy is a two-time triple jump champion at the Penn Relays Carnival, becoming the state of Delaware’s first-ever back-to-back champion at Penn Relays.

Dedric Dukes is a sprinter from Booker T. Washington High School in Miami, Fla., where he was the nation’s No. 6 ranked 400-meter runner (46.61). He is the nation’s sixth-ranked 200m runner (20.88) under all conditions and has a personal record of 100m runner (10.60). In 2009, Dukes was part of a gold-medal winning medley relay team at the World Youth Championships in Bressanone, Italy, where they set a world-youth best time of 1:50.33.

Phil Duncan is a distance runner from Boone High School in Orlando, Fla. He has clocked personal-best times of 4:14.52 (1,600m), 9:11.31 (3,200m), 13:04.99 (4,000m), 15:13.09 (5,000m) and 1:57.08 (800m). Duncan was the 2010 All-Central Florida boys runner of the year, as named by the Orlando Sentinel. His senior year, he placed second at the FHSAA Class 4A State Cross Country Championships with a time of 15:13.09. He won the 2.5-mile race at the Manhattan Invitational, competing against a national field. Duncan placed fifth in the 3,200m at the 2011 FHSAA Class 4A State Championships with a time of 9:28.21.

Eduardo Garcia is a distance runner from Mandarin High School in Jacksonville, Fla. He has recorded personal-best times of 4:16.65 (1,600m), 6:58.50 (2,000m steeplechase), 9:05.57 (3,000m), 9:26.80 (3,200m) and 15:16.88 (5,000m). He placed fourth at the FHSAA Class 4A State Championships in the 1,600m (4:16.65) and was seventh overall in the 3,200m (9:31.86). Garcia is a two-time district champion in both the 1,600m and the 3,200m.

Hugh Graham, Jr. is the nation’s No. 4-ranked 400-meter runner from Miami Northwestern High School in Miami, Fla., with a personal-best time of 46.44. He also ran the 100m (10.53) and the 200m at 21.12. Graham was the 2011 FHSAA Class 4A State runner-up in the 400m (46.72) and the 100m (10.55). He also ran on his team’s second-place 4x400m relay (3:13.97). Miami Northwestern also holds the country’s best time in the 4x400 in 2011 at 3:10.69.  Graham was named to the 2011 Miami Herald All-Dade Track and Field First Team in the 100m, 400m and 4x400m.

John-Logan Hines is a distance runner from Boone High School in Orlando, Fla. He has clocked personal-best times of 4:17.94 (1,600m), 9:14.06 (3,200m) and 15:19.10 (5,000m). Hines was third at the FHSAA Class 4A State Championships in the 3,200m in a time of 9:16.47. He was also a conference, district and regional champion in that event.

Alexander Izewski, brother of current Florida track and field athlete Josh Izewski, is a distance runner from Central Bucks East High School in Doylestown, Pa. He has logged personal-best times of 9:24.36 (3,200m), 9:03.45 (3,000m) and 16:25 (5,000m).

Tyler Osorio is a sprinter/hurdler from Celebration High School in Celebration, Fla. He is the 2011 FHSAA Class 3A State Champion in both the 100m (10.54) and the 400m (47.86). He is the nation’s 29th-ranked 100m runner (10.54) and has a personal record of 47.74 in the 400m. Osorio also holds personal-best times of 37.80 (300m hurdles) and 21.76 (200m). He also competed in football for Celebration, where he scored eight touchdowns his senior season and had 30 receptions for 693 yards.

Ciarra Brewer is the 2009 and 2011 California state champion in the triple jump and has a personal-best wind-legal mark in that event of 43-2.25. Brewer is the nation’s No. 1 ranked athlete in the girls high school triple jump. Brewer also claimed the triple jump at the 2011 New Balance Indoor Championships. Additionally, she holds personal-best marks of 19-11.50 in the long jump and 5-8 in the high jump. Brewer participated in the World Youth Championships her sophomore season, recording her personal-best triple jump mark.

Taylor Burke is a three-time defending Ohio State high jump champion, holding the state’s all-time high school record at 6-1.25 in the event. Burke was the 2011 New Balance Indoor National Champion in the high jump at 5-10.75 and claimed the 2010 Nike Indoor National Championship at 5-10.75. She was a National Scholastic Sports Foundation All-American in 2010 and 2011 and named All-Team USA by USA Today in 2010. She is a four-time All-Ohio selection. Burke also won the Ohio Association of Track and Cross Country Coaches indoor state high jump titles in 2009 and 2010 and was the runner-up in her senior season of 2011. Burke will also play goalkeeper on Florida’s soccer team after earning 2010 National Soccer Coaches Association of America High School All-America honors and setting the Ohio state record with 15 consecutive shutouts.

Ashley Favors is a hurdler from Riverview High School in Riverview, Fla. She has recorded personal-best times of 14.16m (100mH), 43.75 (300mH) and 1:03.55 (400mH). She also has posted a personal-best long jump mark of 18-2. Favors was the runner-up in both the 100m hurdles and the 300m hurdles at the 2011 FHSAA Class 4A State Track and Field Championships. She was named the Tampa Tribune’s Girls Track and Field Athlete of the Year, leading Hillsborough County in the 100mH, the 300mH, the long jump and the 200m. Favors also was a talented basketball player in high school as well.

Tenley Godfrey is a distance runner from The Baylor School in Chattanooga, Tenn. She has clocked personal-best times of 5:13.53 (1,600m), 11:02.66 (3,200m) and 17:48.30 (5,000m). Godfrey finished third at the 2011 TSSAA State Championships in the 3,200m and was sixth in the 1,600m. She was the runner-up at the 2010 TSSAA State Cross Country Championships with a personal-best time of 18:27.06 (5K). Her senior season, Godfrey was a first-team Nike Regional All-American.

Bria Goodson is a sprinter from Orange Park High School in Orange Park, Fla. She has charted personal-best times of 12.19 (100m), 24.83 (200m) and 54.71 (400m). Goodson placed fourth in the 400m at the 2011 FHSAA Class 4A State Championships in a time of 55.98.

Macy Huskey is a distance runner from Cardinal Gibbons High School in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. She has recorded personal-best times of 5:01.91 (1,600m), 18:30.61 (three mile) and 18:59.60 (5,000m). Huskey placed sixth at the 2011 FSHAA Class 2A State Championships in the 1,600m and was seventh overall in the 800m at that event. As a sophomore in 2009, Huskey was the Miami Herald’s High School Athlete of the Year. She holds the school record in the 800m (2:19), mile (5:01.91) and 5K in cross country (18:59.60) and went undefeated against Broward County competition in the 1,600m since her sophomore season, winning three consecutive district crowns.

Trisha Leger is a jumper from Royal Palm Beach High School in Royal Palm Beach, Fla. She holds a personal-best triple jump mark of 39-11. Leger placed third at the 2011 FHSAA Class 4A State Championships in the girls triple jump with a mark of 38-10. She also holds a personal-best long jump mark of 16-4 and a personal-best 200-meter dash time of 26.50. 

Florence Ngetich is a transfer from El Paso Community College in Texas, where she was the 2010 NJCAA national women’s half marathon champion, clocking a time of 1:20.05.6, earning first-team All-America honors. She also claimed the 2010 NJCAA National Championship in cross country, taking home the crown with a winning time of 17:16 in the 5K event and helping her team to a sixth-place finish at the national meet. As a freshman in 2009, Ngetich placed third at the NJCAA Cross Country Championships in a time of 17:47.

Grace VanDeGrift is a distance runner from Durant High School in Durant, Fla. She has clocked personal-best times of 5:00.22 (1,600m), 10:56.13 (3,000m), 11:01.83 (3,200m) and 18:05.58 (5,000m). At the 2011 FHSAA Class 3A State Championships, VanDeGrift finished as the runner-up in the 3,200m (11:01.83) and placed sixth in the 1,600m (5:03.59). She was an all-county performer in both track and cross country.

Sarah Spann is the 2010 FHSAA Class 3A State Cross Country Champion and joins the Gators from Fort Myers High School in Fort Myers, Fla. She has clocked personal-best times of 5:28.61 (1,600m), 11:17.48 (3,200m), 15:08.00 (4,000m) and 17:50.43 (5,000m). Spann placed sixth at the FHSAA Cross Country finals as a junior in 2009. She was third at the 2011 FHSAA Class 3A State Track and Field Championships in the 3,200m (11:17.48) and led off the team’s state runner-up 4x800m relay team.
