Billy Simpson gives us an inside look at the Winter Park boys cross country team in this episode of workout Wednesday. Coach Anguish and the Wildcats did 16x400 at a nearby park. The squad looks to qualify for regionals this week as the road to state gets under way.
All eyes are going to be on the championship races at the flrunners invitational, but this huge meet will also be providing some excellent competition in both the small school and large school races. We have some fast individuals ready to take to the course, as well as some team races that could come down to the wire.
Flrunners had a chance to catch up with Troy Smith, a sophomore from Rockledge who has had an impressive season thus far. He came in second at the Wickham Jamboree in a school record time of 16:09.00 and has won his last two races. The 2016 Hagerty Invitational returns to Seminole State College in Oviedo after UCF hosted the event in 2015. Over two dozen area teams including 2A powerhouse Trinity Prep who will run their complete varsity team, as well as 4A girls champion Winter Park who will showcase their depth with their #5 -60 runners in action. Our team of Billy Simpson and Jason Beede will be on-site providing race videos, interviews, photos, and a complete recap.
The Winter Park boys had their season end earlier than expected last year by barely missing out on the state meet with a 7th place finish in 4A Region 1, AKA the Region Of Death. They are poised to make it back to the state meet and make some noise with the return of a healthy Alex Boucher. Coach Will Anguish gives us a scouting report on this year's team.
After the US men faced disappointment in the 4x100m relay when a DQ took away their bronze medal, this 4x400m became even more important. Add in the fact that in the last Olympics the US men only took home silver when they were usually perennial god medalists in the event and that they were fighting with rival Jamaica, this race held a lot of significance.
Miami Northwestern class of 2009 alumni Brianna Rollins was GOLDEN in the women's 100m hurdles leading a Team USA sweep in that event while Woodham HS (Pensacola - now closed) alum Justin Gatlin failed to make the 200m final, and event he was projected to medal in. Tianna Bartoletta who used to train at IMG Academy and resides in Tampa won Olympic gold in the long jump while Tori Bowie who trains with the Pure Athletics group in Clermont added a bronze in the 200m dash to go with her 100m silver!
