Attention All-Star Coaches & interested folks

  • #1 Attention All-Star Coaches & interested folks
Coaches: If you paid for a room, send me your home address and I'll reimburse you up to $70.

Everybody: I am soliciting opinions for next year. Three idea formats:

    1. Back to regions, but with up to 12 runners per region.
    2. Try classifications again, but with up to 12 runners per class.
    3. ALL SENIORS CAN RUN, and we name the All-Stars AFTER the race (top 7-8 finshers per region).

Personally, I like option three, despite the extra logistical hassle. The idea of laying it on the line to earn all-star status just seems more exciting.

Give me some feedback, Florida XC coaches & runners. This is YOUR race. My job is just to make sure it happens every year.

Great idea number 3 Gary. Great job on the meet this morning. First class all the way. Special thanks to you and Coach Braman and crew! Very nice time. That young man riding Pugsly around did an ok job too. : )

Honestly I like idea 1 the best and then idea 2. If any and every senior can run, like in option 3, then I think it makes it less special for those that are 'picked'. I think we just need to advertise the FACA meet more so prior to the state meet. That way kids have a better general idea of what FACA is and how they can essentially 'make the cut'.

But then again, what do I know? I'm just a slow Miami guy.

One comment in support of option #1: Having regional teams allows a coach well known to a particular area's runners recruit runners to the all-star team. That and the enhanced "regional identity" might result in better attendance by the top runners. That seemed to be the case when comparing last years race to this year's.

I'm in support of #1 because when I participated in the event some time ago our team had a since of pride and connection since we were all from the same general area and knew each other from countless races. By pairing athletes from the same class you might be creating teams that don't know each other. This is especially true for kids from North and South Florida.

I don't think the race was broken much before this year except that it has never been well publicized, but maybe that would change if FACA could come up with a permanent sponsor instead of relying on last minute arrangements in effort to honor the hard working seniors with nothing less than a stellar event.

My intial impression and that of th local coaches I have spoken to the option # 1 is more fair to the athletes that deserved to go which you can loose in option #2 by class.

My child who ran this weekend enjoyed running and bonded with fellow runners in the class system which I do not believe would have happened using the region system.

The Number 1 option and then number 2

I think option 3 would be best if it had a time cutoff. You wouldn't necessarily want a senior running 20 minutes in with those who are several minutes faster, then it just becomes a senior meet. Maybe the elite performance time (I beleive it is 17.15) This would make more athletes aware that they could actually participate in the event once they met that mark, rather than get a last minute call.

If I still ran in high school, I would like something where i could compete on the same team as people in my local area, regardless of classification. So I guess that would be back to number 1. Not sure why it seemed so hard for teams to be complete this year, I think it is an honor to run in that meet.

Good points in all the comments so far. Keep thinking about the meet. At the FACA XC Clinic next June, we will hash it out, and announce the format at the beginning of the cross-country season.

You can be reasonably sure that one tradition will remain: The Miccosukee Greenway course!
