Lakewood High School alumni and current Florida Gator T.J. Holmes is one of three Florida Gators to make the 400m hurdle semi-finals at the World Championships.
All season in Pinellas County, it's been north county East Lake and south county Lakewood vying for dominance. The virtual meet for the 2016 PCAC meet had the East Lake girls winning by a point. It wasn't quite that close but the prediction that it would be a tight race on both sides, held true.
The Lakewood and Steinbrenner girls and boys have been two of the top tier programs in both Pinellas and Hillsborough Country respectively. The Steinbrenner boys won the Wharton Wildcat Invite while the girls were second. The Spartans swept a similar field at the East Lake Early Bird Invitational. They will meet at the Ed Wells Kiwanis Invitational at Clearwater High School. Check out our virtual meet and stay tuned to flrunners.com for photos, recaps, LIVE updates, and results from the days events.
The Lakewood Spartans continued their early-season streak with a dual-squad sweep of the 5th Annual Saint Petersburg City Track Championships held at Northside High School on Thursday. Naturally, the Spartans scored big points from their sprinters and even got some help in the distance events to out-pace host Northside, runners up on both the boys and girls sides.
It's no secret that Chauncey Gardner was a HUGE part of the Cocoa Tigers track and field team. Despite him graduating early and enrolling at the University of Florida, Coach Tyrone Giscombe says they will be just fine with a strong sprint/jumps crew and incoming transfer Jeremy Lawson from Gainesville. West Florida Tech, our second ranked team's success will depend on the health of two-sport standout Valentino Espinoza who didn't compete at the state meet in 2015. We rank every boys team in class 2A!
They say home is where the heart is and that couldn't be more true than for Baylor freshman hurdler T.J. Holmes. Holmes selected the Bears over the University of Florida coming out of high school in 2013 and was reunited with childhood friend and teammate Trayvon Bromell. He finished fourth at the NCAA Championships in the 400m hurdles and as the second leg of the schools 7th place 4x400m relay and concluded his season with a gold medal at the USATF Junior Nationals and a bronze at the 2014 IAAF World Championships. Recently, he announced that he wanted to be closer to home for the remainder of his college career.
The stages keep getting bigger for childhood friends Trayvon Bromell and TJ Holmes. The pair have been racing each other since they were in grade school. They joined the same youth track club and grew up together. They both attended high school in south Saint Petersburg and they both landed on the prestigious Baylor track team for their first year of collegiate track. They are college roommates and will even be rooming together for the World Junior Championships in Eugene, Oregon this week.
Even without the Griffin twins the Lakewood boys continued their dominance of St. Petersburg. The city championships are just three years old and the Lakewood boys have won all three. Their only individual champion was Devontae Persha who won the open 800m in 2:01.59 but the Lakewood boys won both the 4x100m (43.55), the 4x800m (8:29.12), and were runners-up in the 4x400m (3:28.27). The 4x800m time set down the previous meet mark, set by Lakewood.

About 1,500 kids from a handful of countries are competing in the Baytaf AAU track meet in Tampa, Fla., the 99-degree heat gusting around the grounds like tumbleweeds from hell. The swelter does little to quell packs of squealing children zipping in and around the beach tents and loveseat-size coolers, and yet, as Shaquem and Shaquill Griffin wend through the crowd, spectators freeze and take note. T.J. Holmes was an integral part of Lakewood's 2A state championship team. Holmes placed first in the 300 meter hurdles and second in the 110 meter hurdles, and was also part of the schools' third place 4x400 meter relay. Recently, the senior announced he will be joining long time friend and Gibbs senior Trayvon Bromell and run for Baylor University in Waco, Texas. We caught up with Holmes at the 3A state meet where he was supporting his future teammate to talk about his college decision.
When he crunches the numbers and does the math, Lakewood High School track coach Anthony Snead sees a clear path to the state championship. (via www.tampabay.com)
The 51st Annual Ed Wells Jr. Kiwanis Invitational stayed with some conventions and broke completely with others. The Lakewood boys continued their winning ways, while the Osceola girls upset Lakewood and Pinellas Park.
