1A Preview: Can Grace Blair Get Oak Hall Back On Podium? Eddie Romero Nov 3, 2016

Grace Blair of Oak Hall was third at last year's Cross Country Finals and the Eagles finished 4th. It marked the first time in a long time that Coach McTureous' program failed to make the podium. Is 2016 the year Blair and the rest of the girls win another title? Will Chase Hyland of the Pine School end his high school career with a championship? We answer these questions and more in our 1A preview.

1A Girls Team Rankings: Title Race Wide Open, Top Three Separated By FIVE Points Todd Grasley Aug 2, 2016

The Oak Hall girls have been a podium mainstay of the 1A Cross Country Finals the past few years, but finished fourth in 2015 after winning the 1A Region 2 Championship. The Eagles are coming off a state title in track and have one of the most experienced squads in 1A. However, this year might be one of the closest team battles with Westminster Christian, Oak Hall, and Maclay separated by 5 points, and defending state champion Circle Christian returning five of their top seven.

1A Boys Team Rankings: Maclay Returns Four Of Top Seven From 2015 Runner-Up Team Todd Grasley Aug 2, 2016

The Maclay boys finished second in 2015 by fourteen points to Father Lopez. The Marauders return four of their top seven including a trio of James McClure, Jake Mazziotta, and Clay Milford who have the potential to finish in the top ten overall.  Coach Droze knows all about winning and tradition and will face a stiff test from Bishop Snyder. We rank the top 10 boys teams in 1A.

We wanted to salute them one more time in this special feature and say thank you for your support over the years.

Double Duty For Droze: Longtime Maclay Coach To Run Inaugural TCC Women's XC Program As Well Todd Grasley Apr 20, 2016

Coach Gary Droze has been a mainstay in the Tallahassee running community for over two decades leading the Maclay Marauders since 1993. Over his time, his squads have accumulated TWENTY state championships (five each in girls and boys track and girls and boys cross country), dozens of district and regional titles, and have sent many members to run at the collegiate level. Now, Droze will add college coach to his resume after taking on double duty with Maclay and starting the new women's cross country program at nearby Tallahassee Community College. He says he is looking forward to the new role.

Track & Field Team Scores: 1A Boys - TFA Returns Core Nucleus From 2015 Runner-Up Squad Todd Grasley Jan 21, 2016

The First Academy boys finished 6.5 points behind Westminster Academy in 2014 and a mere half point off the top spot again in 2015. Needless to say the Royals are hungry for the team title and will rely on a well balance attack and core nucleus from that runner-up squad. Jahquez Durham (sprints), Allen Wiggins (throws), and Jonathan Griffin-Heard (hurdles/pole vault), along with the relays have the most potential to score big points. Maclay has a very strong distance squad and the classifications top pole vaulter in Darin Meeker and will give them a run at the top spot.

Scouting Report: Maclay Girls & Boys Todd Grasley Aug 27, 2015

Coach Gary Droze's Maclay Marauders are one of the top returning programs on both the boys and girls side in class. If you add into the equation the loss of a good portion of defending state champion Holy Trinity to transfer, it's not unrealistic for both of Droze's teams to make the podium.

Khosla Blazing: State Leading, US#10 14:52.39, Leads Lions To 3A-1 Championship Brian Miller Nov 9, 2014

Tallahassee Leon cross country star Sukhi Khosla has had minimal opportunities to be challenged. When you've already run sub-15 minutes twice before on the state course, that tends to happen.  Racing for just his second time on Tallahassee's Sunny Hill Farms course, last year's 3A state cross country and 1600- and 3200-meter track champion posted a stunning new career best to win the Region 1-3A championship.  Khosla crossed in  a state leading and US#10 time of 14:52.9— just six seconds away from an all-time Florida high school best — and Leon's next three runners all had PRs, leading the Lions to a regional title ahead of Tallahassee Chiles.

1A Girls Team Scores: Depth and Experience Make Holy Trinity Clear Favorite Todd Grasley Jan 27, 2014

Holy Trinity looks like the clear favorite to take the 1A state championship and add some more hardware to the school's rich history. The Tigers finished second behind Maclay in 2013, but look very balanced and are loaded with experience. They should receive a large number of points from Julie Wollrath and Samantha Folio in the distance events, sprinters Daryth and Gaby Gayles who are headed to Stanford as well as Mckenzie Kilborne, the reigning 1A champion in the high jump. Can Maclay stay on the podium once again or will Calvary Christian claim the second spot?

Coaching Teams To The Podium: Gary Droze - (Maclay Boys) Todd Grasley Dec 19, 2013

In this series we take a look at state championship and runner-up coaches, their outlook on the team, the season, and 2014. Coach Gary Droze has been at Maclay for 20 years.  Between cross-country and track & field, his teams have won twenty state titles and finished runner-up fourteen times. The finishes are evenly split between gender and sport (e.g. boys' and girls' cross-country have both earned five state championships; boys have been runner-up three times, girls four). In 2013, the Marauders finished runner-up for the second year in a row at the 1A Cross Country Finals.

In Her Own Words: Stefanie Kurgatt - College Adjustments Stefanie Kurgatt Nov 20, 2013

Hello Flrunners! It’s been awhile but rest assured I have been checking up on all the brilliant running that has been happening down south. Keep it up superstars! Congratulations to all the runners who competed in this past cross country season. To those who competed at the state meet be proud,. You have accomplished more than you probably had imagined. Also I have seen some great college choices and commitments. I know to the seniors this was a stressful process for you all. All the hard work is paying off, do not stop now though. Your future is as bright as you make it.

Scouting Report: Maclay Boys Todd Grasley Aug 6, 2013

The Maclay Marauders boys cross country team finished runner-up at the 1A Cross Country Finalsin 2012. It came as a suprise to most people who had them pegged no better than third. The team slipped past Trinity Prep by three points and placed four of their top five runners in the top twenty-three spots.

Hello everyone, so last Friday was my last state meet, and boy was it quite the experience. This blog is pretty much going to be a big thanks to everyone so bear with me.  First off, thank you to UNF for hosting the state meet, I always enjoy running there. Words cannot even begin to describe the emotions during our State meet. From the first race to the last there was just so much adrenaline and excitement from the Lady Marauders. Every single one of us did something beyond what we thought to help out the team. In the end we were able to pull out a team title and we are so grateful for our coaches and all the support we’ve gotten.

In Her Own Words: Stefanie Kurgatt Stefanie Kurgatt Apr 24, 2013

Hello Everyone. State is this week, I can’t believe it. I will not get all sappy with my blog just yet, because we still have one more meet left. Sorry parents, after state the emotions will come spilling out. Until then only excitement and adrenaline is in me. Last week Maclay competed in the Regional meet at Bishop Snyder and that went really well. Along with grabbing two team titles, ten girls and nine boys qualified for state.

In Her Own Words: Stefanie Kurgatt Todd Grasley Apr 17, 2013

Hello Flrunners. I’d like to start this blog a little different this time. As we all know, this past Monday the Boston Marathon took place. A very tragic event occurred on what seemed to be a good day. It is hard to believe that something like this could happen and cannot imagine how horrible it must have felt to be there. My heart and prayers go out to all the families and competitors and everyone at Boston.

In Her Own Words: Stefanie Kurgatt Stefanie Kurgatt Apr 11, 2013

Hello everyone. It is officially post season and many of us are preparing to do our last three meets ever for our respective high schools. What an overwhelming thought that can be. I know it has finally kicked in now that these are my last meets for Maclay.

In Her Own Words: Stefanie Kurgatt Todd Grasley Apr 4, 2013

Hello, hope everyone is having a good week thus far. It is officially post season for most 1A schools as we just finished our last meet before the championship season. Districts are just around the corner, but until then we will be training hard as ever.

In Her Own Words: Stefanie Kurgatt Stefanie Kurgatt Mar 27, 2013

Hello everyone. I hope everyone is having a great start to their week. I had to come back to reality as Spring Break has ended for me and I am back to school. Things are really starting to sink in as we only have a little over eight weeks of school left. I am nearing my last few high school track meets and every day goes by so quickly. Last week was FSU Relays and it was bitter sweet after racing that meet for five years in a row.

In Her Own Words: Stefanie Kurgatt Stefanie Kurgatt Mar 19, 2013

Hey there Flrunners! Hope everyone is having a fantastic week. It definitely is a good one for many of us here in Tallahassee. This week is out spring break and many of us are living it up at the beach and what not. It is so crazy how after spring break it is almost April and then school is practically over. For all the seniors, enjoy your last few months and live it to the fullest. You are about to open up a new chapter in your life. Enjoy and cherish every moment that you can because we are all growing up very quickly.

In Her Own Words: Stefanie Kurgatt Stefanie Kurgatt Mar 13, 2013

Habari! Hope Everyone is having an awesome week thus far. The days are certainly going by super fast, and I can’t believe that we are two weeks into March. As for that time change,  I can’t quite tell if I like that or not. After just stressing how important sleep is, losing an hour isn’t always great, but gaining some extra daylight at the end of the day isn’t so bad. So, I guess there is only one solution to this problem, everyone go to sleep an hour earlier.

In Her Own Words: Stefanie Kurgatt Todd Grasley Mar 6, 2013

Hello everybody! Well, outdoor track in Florida is well underway and most of us will be approaching our second or third meet this weekend. It’s crazy to think that this is my last high school season, but I am going to enjoy every bit of it and definitely blessed to get this far. After Seattle it was time to get back to reality and back to the usual schedule. I realized how much I love sleep and this might sound sad, but every runner should know how I feel. When I have any sort of free time the first thing I want to do is sleep. Sleep is glorious and definitely a key component when it comes to being able to compete at your fullest potential and I love it. Anyway, if I could give any advice to anyone for this season is sleep more.

Hello everybody.  It’s been awhile, but lucky I have the pleasure of blogging for Flrunners again for track season. I hope you guys aren’t too sick of me yet.I am quite excited to blog again because I am healthy, strong, and back to competing. So far track season has definitely started off with a bang. I have been doing some indoor meets to get back into racing form since I missed cross country.

In Her Own Words: Stefanie Kurgatt Stefanie Kurgatt Nov 15, 2012

Habari! Congrats to everyone who will be competing this coming weekend at State. I would like to make this blog a little different than the rest, basically a little bit of motivation for everyone who is a runner, competed in the 2012 cross country season, and preparing for the state meet on Saturday. You all deserve some major recognition for your achievements.

In Her Own Words: Stefanie Kurgatt Stefanie Kurgatt Nov 7, 2012

Habari! It’s been awhile, so I hope everyone is doing well as State steadily approaches. I have been slowly getting back to running and so far have no complaints. Everything has been going great and everyone at the UF Orthopedic Center helped me out so much. It has been a steady progression, but it is definitely an amazing feeling just to be back on the beautiful trails of Tallahassee.

In Her Own Words: Stefanie Kurgatt Stefanie Kurgatt Oct 23, 2012

Habari! Hope everyone is doing well, as the weather is cooling off. I absolutely love this weather.Tallahassee has been just gorgeous. Like always, Florida distance running is a powerhouse! Thanks for everyone who does the race recaps, they are wonderful, and it is nice to be updated on races that Maclay does not attend.

College Announcement: Maclay Senior Stefanie Kurgatt Todd Grasley Oct 22, 2012

Maclay senior Stefanie Kurgatt is a five time state champion in track and field and was the 2011 1A Cross Country Finals runner-up. This season she has been sidelined with some injuries, but when she wasn't rooting on her teammates, she was planning the next endeavour, her college career. Kurgatt narrowed her choices down to TCU, Wake Forest, and Georgetown. See which of the three she will choose in her college announcement.

In Her Own Words: Stefanie Kurgatt Stefanie Kurgatt Oct 9, 2012

Habari! (I realized I always say “hello”’ in my blogs, so I figured I might change it up a bit and say it in Swahili). First and foremost, HUGE congrats to Estero runner Kacy Smith, for recently committing to Ole Miss. What a wonderful, talented young lady who only will continue to shine.

Chris Sumner Takes A Trip Down Memory Lane, Circa 1998 Chris Sumner Oct 4, 2012

Recently while cleaning my apartment and going through some of my storage containers I stumbled upon my stash of newspapers from that year. It was fun reading through the old papers and reminiscing of that epic chase. But to my surprise there was another treasure hidden in one of these newspapers. It was the Sunday, September 6th 1998 stat column.

In Her Own Words: Stefanie Kurgatt Stefanie Kurgatt Sep 26, 2012

Hello Flrunners! As always hope everyone is having a great season thus far and continues to as the season progresses. There have been some pretty impressive performances all throughout Florida and everyone is really showing that distance running in Florida is one to be reckoned with. Congrats to all the runners who each week continue to excel and truly show their passion for running.

In Her Own Words: Stefanie Kurgatt Todd Grasley Sep 13, 2012

Hello Flrunners! Cross country season has officially started and races are well under way. I am a little behind on the blogging due to massive amounts of homework and college preparation so my apologies for that. Our first official race was at the ARP- the state meet course.

In Her Own Words: Stefanie Kurgatt Stefanie Kurgatt Aug 31, 2012

Hello everybody! The first time I blogged, summer was winding down and I know we were all trying to get everything ready for school. Well now all of the runners have just completed either their first or second week of school!  It was my first week of school last week, and it maybe still has not kicked in that I am a senior.

Scouting Report: Maclay Girls Todd Grasley Aug 16, 2012

Maclay just missed out on a podium spot in 2011 after finishing fourth behind Holy Trinity, Oak Hall, and champion Providence. The Marauders return one of the top individuals in 1A, senior Stefanie Kurgatt. Kurgatt finished second at last year's Cross Country Finals and is coming off an exceptional outdoor track and field season.

In Her Own Words: Stefanie Kurgatt Stefanie Kurgatt Aug 8, 2012

Hello everybody! I hope you all are having a wonderful summer. My name is Stefanie Kurgatt and I am a rising senior at Maclay School.   I have been given the honor- along with other great runners in Florida- of writing a blog about the upcoming XC season.  I would like to thank Flrunners for giving me the opportunity to share my journey as the season progresses.

Interview with Jana Stolting Jason Byrne Mar 15, 2009

Jana Stolting currently leads the state in the 3200 with an 11:02.  The junior from Tallahassee's Maclay School gives us some of her deep insight into training and being coached by legend Gary Droze... as well as her opinion about the rabid duck population in Tallahassee and her passion for spelunking.  It's certainly never a dull interview with Jana!!!

Tallahassee is a Distance Running Hotbed Bob Thomas Nov 14, 2008

There is a uniqueness to Tallahassee that separates it from the rest of the Florida when it comes to distance running. Couple an extraordinary network of running trails, an active and supportive community track club, a county-wide middle school cross country program more than 300-strong with a collection of the state’s most accomplished coaches and you have the blueprint for sustained success. You could make a compelling argument - without the benefit of lobbyists - that the Capital City is the state seat for high school cross country running, per capita, at least since 1997.

North Florida Boys Preview Tyrone Gayle Aug 25, 2007

North Florida, as it has since the beginning of Y2K, will start with three perenial powers who each have three state titles in the seven years since the dawn of the decade:  in Tallahassee the Timberwolves of Chiles and the Marauders of Maclay and two and half hours east down I-10 in Jacksonville the “wait, I thought they graduated everybody” boys of Bishop Kenny.  Beyond those three Tallahassee and Jacksonville championship dynasties, Clay County's Bears of Bartram Trail will look to mix it up. And Flagler Palm Coast, which was marked as the only North Florida team mentioned on the NTN South Region poll, will also be vying for top honors.  FPC, itself an amazing dynasty, has two titles and two runner-ups since 2000.  Don’t get me wrong, there is a nice group of other teams to watch as well, but these five will be the cream of the crop in North Florida.
