Miami Northwestern girls 4x400 relay hadn't lost a race all year in 2016 which included several head to head match ups with South Florida foe Northeast. The Miami Northwestern Lady Bulls continued their dynasty in Florida track and field with their 9th straight state championship. Coach Carmen Jackson's squad tallied 157 points over 100 more than runner-up Northeast. They are the clear favorite in class 3A with 2016 runner-up Northeast a near lock to repeat in that position as well.
43 points was all the Chiles' boys track team needed to win their third straight 3A state championship. The Timberwolves lose thrower Cole Upthegrove to graduation but return both Jordan Poole and James Hansen as well as a talented group of distance runners. Creekside and Miami Northwestern should also be in the mix, but don't count out Miami Norland who now have transfer Tyrese Cooper's, one of the most dangerous sprinters in the country.
Perennial power LSU dipped into the Sunshine State and grabbed the nation's #2 110mH Damion Thomas of Northeast High School. Thomas owns a personal best of 13.42 and is a two-time 4A state champion in that event and was runner-up as a freshman in 2014. On the international level, he is the 2016 CARIFTA Games gold medalist and was a member of the IAAF World U20 Championship team for Jamaica. He posted the fastest time of the prelims, 13.48 (-0.8m/s) and looked like a sure fire medal pick before falling in the next round. We caught up with him to talk about his decision and plans for the 2017 track season.
Damion Thomas ranked as the #2 110mH in the class of 2017 announced a final four of North Carolina, South Carolina, Southern Cal, and LSU and gave his thoughts on each one of the prospective suitors.
Northeast High School senior Damion Thomas is one of the top hurdlers in the country and one of the best in the world. Thomas is in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil at the Olympic Games, but he's not competing. He was selected at part of the TD Ameritrade Olympic Hopefuls program, which sends promising Tokyo 2020 Olympians, to the games for a week of mentorship, training opportunities, and a look at what it is like to be in the best environment in all of sports.
Northeast High School rising senior Damion Thomas had what his father calls his best race ever in the 110mH at the Jamaican Junior Trials in Kingston. Thomas lined up against Dejour Russell of Calabar and Rohan Cole of UTech two of the fastest hurdles in the world, and came away with the win in 13.5s into a -3.2 m/s wind to earn one of two coveted spots on the island nation team for the IAAF World U20 Championship in Poland next month.
The ladies of Northeast High School posted the second fastest 4x100m relay time of the year, a 3:44.01, but it came against rival Miami Northwestern with a 3A championship on the line. The Miami Northwestern Lady Bulls were unstoppable at the Florida Relays running 45.65 in the PRELIMS. Dillard and Rockledge who own the second and third fastest times are nearly one second slower than MNW. The top five teams all ran 47 seconds or better. The American Heritage boys 4x100m relay team of Marco Wilson, Khalil Herbert, Patrick Surtain, and Anthony Schwartz set the bar high for the rest of the state's teams when they ran 40.95s to win the Pepsi Florida Relays. Coral Gables and Columbus came close with times of 41.13 and 41.14, while Northeast and Pine Forest clocked 41.20 on the nose. Check out the top 500 boys 4x100m relay teams for the 2016 season.
Northeast High School freshman Jan'Taijah Ford had a spectacular 2016 season. Ford, or T1 as they call her, ran away with the 3A state title in the 400m dash in 54.01s and followed that up with a new personal best time of 53.77 to win Flo Golden South and give her an automatic ticket to the Brooks PR Invitational. Northeast (Oakland Park) rising junior Damion Thomas is one of the top 110 meter hurdlers in the field at this weekend's Brooks PR Invitational. We caught up with him before heading out to Seattle.
Jeyland Valentin set new personal bests at the end of her senior season which saw college coaches from across the country coveting the Northeast hurdler. Valentin, who was fourth in the 100m hurdles and third in the 300m hurdles at the 4A state meet and boasts PR's of 14.30 and 41.93, recently announced she will attend Indiana University.
Saturday left no doubt statewide that 4A is one of the toughest classifications in the entire state. Andy Warrener has a complete recap of all the action!

The top teams in our girls Super 25 reside in South Florida with Miami Northwestern, Southridge, and Ransom Everglades in Dade County and Hallandale, St. Thomas Aquinas, and Northeast in neighboring Broward. Miami Northwestern is the top ranked team according to our girls Super 25 team rankings for the third straight week. The Lady Bulls posted 188 points to win the Hallandale Invitational over the host Chargers and Miami Southridge ranked number two and number four in our Super 25. The ladies of Miami Northwestern are a South Florida powerhouse and at the 2015 Louie Bing Classic they went head to head with St. Thomas Aquinas, but it was no contest. The Bulls bulldozed the Raiders 182-124.5 in the team standings. They are the top team in our girls Super 25 Power Rankings.
t was a record breaking day at the 5th Annual Walter Dix Invitational Relays. The top finishing girls teams for the day were, Northeast winning with 97 points, Dillard in 2nd with 79 points, and Ely in 3rd with 72 points.
Daeshon Gordon calls the 2014 outdoor track and field season one of the longest of her high school career. The Northeast (Oakland Park) class of 2014 hurdler and LSU signee has been competing since early February. Gordon says the main point of attending the AAU Club Championships in Orlando this past weekend was to prepare her for the World Junior Championships two weeks from now in Eugene, Oregon.
In this series we take a look at state championship and runner-up coaches, their outlook on the team, the season, and the future of the program. Coach Marshall Trace has been coaching for seven years, his first four as an assistant at St. Thomas Aquinas and the past three as head coach at Northeast High School in Oakland Park. In 2014, Trace guided the Hurricanes to a runner-up finish in 4A, the first podium finish for the girl's program since 1984.

We crunched the numbers in each class to see how the top teams would fare against one another, but what if class didn't matter? Which team is the BEST in Florida? We scored ten deep for individuals and ten deep for relays with first place receiving ten points on down to one point for tenth place.
4A might be the most competitive class from top to bottom in the whole entire state loaded with state leading and some of the best times in the nation! On the girl's side Athlete of the Week Krystal Sparling has been brilliant in the sprints while Northeast senior and LSU signee Daeshon Gordon is re-writing the hurdle record books. Not to be outdone by the Gordon sibling rivalry is brother Daeshon who leads both the 110 and 300m hurdle categories.

2013 was a good year for the ladies of St. Thomas Aquinas as they picked up 4A state championship in track and field and then followed that up with a 4A Cross Country Finals team championship. The Raiders beat out Boyd Anderson by ten points, avenging a seven point loss at the hands of the Cobras in 2012. 2014 looks to be one of the best team's the school has had with the addition of Diamond Spaulding one of the top sprinters in the country.
Northeast freshman Damian Thomas has only one meet under his belt as a high schooler and he has made the most of it. Thomas, is the lone Florida freshman in the boys indoor national rankings. His performance at the Jimmy Carnes Youth Indoor Meet in the 55 meter hurdles of 8.23 seconds is the sixth best mark for his class while his time of 53.05 in the 400 meters gives him the tenth fastest time in the nation for the class of 2017. LSU commit Daeshon Gordon and twin brother Deron come into 2014 with the top times in the 300 meter hurdles. Both are now at Northeast High School after running for Boyd Anderson in 2013. Daeshon is the reigning 4A state championship in the 300's and is only one of two hurdlers to break 43 seconds. Deron, who missed out on the state meet last year, is one of two hurdlers to dip under 38 seconds.
Daeshon Gordon is not only one of the best hurdlers in the state but her times in both the 100 and 300 meter hurdles rank her in the top ten nationally as well. Gordon spent the past three seasons at Boyd Anderson, but has transferred to Northeast High School for her senior season. A two-time state champion as an individual and member of Boyd Anderson's 2012 state championship team, Gordon has decided to continue her running career at LSU.
This series is all about recognizing the people who are working very hard to rise up the ladder in the track world. It's about showing these athletes that we know they exist and that it's not always about the athletes who are breaking records and winning state titles.
