Titusville senior Mason Jones was the model for consistency this cross country season with eight races under 16 minutes. Recently, Jones ended his recruitment by staying in state and selecting Florida Southern. He joins a Mocs program that is coming off a 26th place finish at D2 Nationals. We caught up with him to talk about the recruiting process, his decision, the upcoming track season, and much more.

For the second consecutive season, the top men's cross country program in the South Region are the Florida Southern Moccasins as the Mocs repeated as champions at this year's NCAA Division II South Regional Championships held here Saturday morning at Sharon Johnston Park and will now compete at the NCAA Division II National Championships in two weeks. Fort Myers senior Dean McGregor has made his college decision. McGregor, who was 29th at the 3A Cross Country Finals in 2013 and placed 11th this springin the 1,600m at the outdoor state championships, picked Florida Southern College in Lakeland. We talked to Dean about his choice to become a Moc, the recruiting process, and his goals for the future.

Kyle Butler's Second Shot Todd Grasley Aug 20, 2014

This fall, Kyle Butler enters his junior year at Florida Southern College, where, at 26, he is older than his coach. His first attempt at college ended abruptly. A 9:46 2-miler in high school, he was part of three Florida cross country state championships. After earning a partial scholarship to Florida Atlantic University, he joined the cross country team in 2007, quickly became the No. 2 runner and over the course of the next year cut down his 8K PR down to 26:07. He didn't put that same kind of effort into his homework, however, and was kicked out of school his sophomore year. (via Runner's World)

Eighth grade distance runner Trevor Foley competed with the collegians this weekend at the Embry Riddle Last Chance Classic. His mom, Shannon Foley, uploaded this video of the 3000 meters where Trevor placed 18th in 9:31.76. Bobby Ormsby of Cypress Lake won the race in 8:46.94 just one one-hundredth of a second faster than his Florida Southern teammate David Tomchinsky. Bryce Bell, another middle school standout, was 28th out of 36 runners. 

4-Year Vets Pace The Mocs At NCAA Division II National Championships Todd Grasley Nov 25, 2013

Of the seven Florida Southern runners who made the trip to Washington for the 2013 NCAA Division II National Championships, only two had ever run in a race of that magnitude prior to Saturday. At the end of the day, it was those two, seniors Chris Yanichko and David Tomchinsky, who were the Moccasin leaders in the program’s seventh appearance at the national finals. Both of the 4-year veterans ended their careers with personal-best times in the 10K, helping the Moccasins to a 27th-place finish. (via Florida Southern Athletics)

Florida Southern Men Win SSC Title, Set Sights On Nationals Kyle Butler Nov 1, 2013

The Florida Southern Men’s Cross Country team recently won a record 16th Sunshine State Conference title. The Moccasins scored 34 points by placing five runners in the top 14, with their top three finishers placing third, fourth and fifth, respectively. The Moccasins are currently ranked 1st in the South region of Division 2 and they know that there is a huge target on their back. They do not have time to celebrate. There are other goals to be met. The top three teams from each region make it to the National Championship meet to be held on Nov. 23rd in Spokane, Washington.

Tucked in on the north side of Highway 60, just a wee bit south of Plant City, is a tidy rectangle of trees, trails, hills and lakes called Sydney-Dover Trail Park.  Rarely noticed by the tens of thousands of drivers hurrying to and from Tampa (or to the stores that have besieged it), this runners Eden has been adopted by the University of Tampa cross country team for their annual early season event.  It has subsequently been claimed by UT's Jessica Forrester as her own little corner of the universe.

Larios to Replace Dawson as New Head Coach at Florida Southern Press Release Mar 6, 2007

Jose Larios, who has been the cross country and track coach at Warner Southern College the past six years, will be the new cross country and track coach at Florida Southern College. Larios will succeed longtime Moccasin coach A.L. "Buck" Dawson, who is retiring at the end of the current school year.Under Dawson, the Moccasin cross country program has dominated the Sunshine State Conference. The men's team has won the last 10 SSC championships and the women's team has won six SSC titles, including last fall's. Both teams qualified for their respective NCAA Division II Championships last fall, with the women finishing 15th and the men 20th.
