Andres Arroyo idolized Roberto Clemente as a kid growing up. Like Clemente, the former Colonial Grenadier, dreamed of roaming the outfield in baseball's major leagues. As he entered high school, those dreams changed and track and field called his name. Now, at the University of Florida, Arroyo will compete in his first Olympic Games in the 800m, and represent his birthplace of Puerto Rico. We caught up with him to talk about his road to Rio, the Olympic Games, and much more.

Add another Florida native to those who will be competing at the 2014 World Youth Championships. Andres Arroyo, who had one of the greatest high school distance careers in Florida (1:47.79, 4:04.45, 8:51.47,14:59.18), won the CAC Championships in Mexico in the U20 800 meters. The University of Florida freshman will represent his native Puerto Rico. He says he had a great time representing his native land and racing against competition from other countries.

We will have a look back at 2013 later in the week, but our friends at Flotrack came out with their list of top moments from the year. Capturing 2013's most jawdropping moment was former Colonial star Andres Arroyo laying down a 1:47.79 for 800 meters at the Florida Relays. The University of Florida would be his eventual college destination. At the time it was one of the fastest marks for ANY LEVEL runner in the country at that distance.

A cool brisk morning welcomed runners to Baldwin Park for the 4A District 4 Championship. The Winter Park girls running on their home course ran away with the girls team trophy lead by sophomore Katherine Kuhn. On the boys side, it looked like it would be a battle between Brandon Marques of Timber Creek and Connor Ferrentino. Marquez separated at two miles and coasted to a time of 15:28.50. It was a big day for the Wolves as they placed three guys in the top four spots to win the team title by ONE point over Colonial.

In late September, Rene "Coach P" Plasencia and Colonial High School football coach Michael Short saved a students life after he collapsed while running. Earlier tonite at 5:30PM, the Orange County School Board was set to honor Plasencia and Short for their efforts in saving the students life. Sloppy conditions is an understatement to describe the 42nd Annual Edgewater Invitational. Pouring down rain and intermittent lightning strikes, postponed the start of the meet over an hour. The rain slowed and the lightning halted, but there was one more obstacle, daylight. As time was of the essence, they decided to run all athletes together: junior varsity, boys, and girls varsity which made for one bunched up start.

Colonial senior Andres Arroyo added three more state titles to his resume by winning the distance triple at the 4A State Championships. Those three golds brought Arroyo's total to six in track. He has also has two individual titles in cross country and two team titles to go along with them. For his accomplishments, he was honored by Governor Rick Scott at a recent state cabinet meeting at Nemours Childrens Hospital. Arroyo says it was a great feeling to be reocgnized by the governor.

Less than 48 hours after running 1:47.79 for 800 meters, Andres Arroyo was back on the track, and back to posting blazing times. The Colonial senior's time for the half mile at the Florida Relays was a US#1, second fastest by any American this year, and 8th fastest in the world. That was Thursday. Saturday morning, Arroyo ran at the Embry Riddle Spikes Classic and posted a 9:01.34 for 3200 meters.

As a junior he won the 4A cross country state championship and led Colonial to school's first team title in any sport. Arroyo won the Boys Varsity Gold Race at the FSU Invitational/Pre-State meet beating one of the toughest fields of the year in a new course record time of 15:19.8. Smith was equally impressiv showing guts in the final stage of the Girls Varsity Gold Race at Pre-State to get the victory in 18:06.

Held at the Flagler County Fairgrounds--home of their annual Cracker Day Rodeo--the race started with the crack of a rawhide whip, followed a tough, mud-slowed course and finished in front of the stands in the Main Arena. Colonial senior Andres Arroyo won the Ted Benz XC Jamboree for the second consecutive year in 16:04.20. The Colonial Grenadiers took the team title. On the girls side, University sophomore Autumn Bartlett disturbed a perfect score for Merritt Island by winning in a time of 20:16.40. The Mustangs scored 22 points to win the team championshionship.

Colonial junior Andres Arroyo and Chiles senior Lily Williams are this week's Warrior of the Week. Arroyo started his week with a 1:51 split on Colonial's winning 4x800 relay team at the Metro Conference Championships. Two days later he blasted a state leading and US#2 time of 9:10.37. He capped the weekend off with a meet record, state leading and US#4 4:11.76 in the 1600 meters. Williams broke a new FSU Relays meet record with her state-leading and US#2 time of 10:30.53 in the 3200.

The Colonial High School boys cross country team made history in 2011. Coach Plasencia's squad captured the 4A Cross Country State  Championship with an 86 to 103 victory over second place Miami Columbus. The title was the first for the Grenadiers in any sport. On a windy afternoon at Winter Park High School, the Metro area freshmen and sophomore runners took to the Showalter Field course battling the other competitors and the grueling chills from the wind. Both of the races would include fewer runners than a typical meet so entries were unlimited and only the top four from each school would score points for the team with the five, six, and seven runners taking points away from other teams.

When Colonial High School opened in 1958 President Eisenhower was in office, gas cost a quarter, and NASA was just being formed. Fast forward fifty-three years and history is once again at the forefront. The school is looking for their first state title in any sport and this year's cross country squad could be the one to do it. Coach Rene Plasencia, who is in his tenth season as head coach, says it's the team camaraderie that always makes the Grenadiers a force to be reckoned with.

Belen Jesuit pack a punch this season! Four of their top five return with plenty of firepower to fill in the gap and then some. Elliot Clemente will lead the way (likely for the entire state) with his 15:03 season best from last year, pacing Belen to a 15:58 team average. Colonial and Estero ring in at a somewhat distant but certainly not insurmountable #2 and #3 position in our computer rankings.
