3A Team Rankings: Chiles' Boys Seek 4th State Title, Will Have To End Belen Dynasty Todd Grasley Aug 22, 2014

Sarasota appears to have a large lead on Seabreeze with a strong top two of Angelina Grebe and Sage Lyons, but a win for the Sailors would mean knocking off powerhouse Estero. Although they are seeded 11th and Coach Sommer says it's not the best year, I've learned to never count out the Wildcats. There is a reason they have won four consecutive state titles! On the boy's side, Belen Jesuit has won seven of the last eight cross country crowns, but their might be a new sherrif in town. After finishing second behind Belen in 2013, the Timberwolves are hoping they can add their fourth championship since 2003.

XC Raw Data: Boys Top Returning Teams Based On Track Times Ryan Raposo Aug 2, 2014

As we transition into the 2014-15 school year and shift from track & field back to cross country, it's fun to utilize the flrunners database to see just what teams dominated distance races on the track and what happens if you scored those events as a cross country meet. This is by far one of my favorite features. Here's what the database tells us...

Chiles' Standout Has Awesome Experience At Appalachian State Todd Grasley Jan 20, 2014

If you told Cade Zimmerman when he was starting high school that he would go to college on a running scholarship, he would probably say you were crazy. When the Chiles senior began running he thought it would help him earn a a soccer scholarship. Now the recruiting process is over, for the 3A Cross Country Finals, sixth place finisher. Zimmerman says it was different from what he had imagined.

2014 A Look Ahead: 3A Top Returning Teams - Are The Belen & Estero Dynasties Dying Out? Todd Grasley Dec 25, 2013

At the beginning of the month we took a look ahead at the top individuals returning for the 2014 cross country season. Now we take a look at the top teams. With the year coming to an end and another successful cross country season in the books it is never too early to take a look at the competition for next year! The rankings show a new wave of teams coming through. The Belen boys and Estero girls have ruled the roost for a long time and usually end up reloading rather than rebuilding. Coach Sommer let me hear about it for counting the girls out last year and I am not ready to make that mistake again. We will have to wait and see what happens!

3A Team Rankings: Estero Girls Look For Four-Peat, Can Chiles Boys Dethrone Belen Dynasty? Todd Grasley Oct 23, 2013

The Estero girls look to be a lock in 3A. They have won every meet this year including victories at the flrunners.com Invitational Race of Champions and at Pre-State, and have won three consecutive state titles. On the boys side, it appeared Belen Jesuit was the clear favorite much like every year. The Wolverines have won six of the last seven state championships, but proved they are vulnerable after Chiles defeated them at Pre-State. Coach Gowan's squad is predicted as a ONE POINT favorite. Want to talk about slim margins? Everyone has to be on their "A" game.

Three In A Row For Xiang, Zimmerman Leads Chiles To Team Trophy At Mandarin Mustang Invitational Todd Grasley Sep 14, 2013

It was a beautiful day for a race in Jacksonville. Sunny and dry in the early morning races. Perfect conditions for some great times at the Mandarin Mustang Invitational. Karen Xiang continued to tear up the competition as she picked up her third win in as many meets. Cade Zimmerman of Chiles proved why they will be contenders in the postseason, taking individual honors and guiding his team to the team trophy as well. Mike Leary was on-site with over 900 photos of all the action.

Chiles standout Carly Thomas has chosen her college destination. The 2009 3A Cross Country State Championship will stay in Tallahassee and run for Florida State. In the end she chose the Seminoles over Mississippi State. She says it was her bond with Coach Karen Harvey and current FSU runners that sealed the deal.

In Her Own Words: Lily Williams On The Foot Locker Experience Lily Williams Dec 13, 2011

Wow. What a weekend. I don’t know where to start! I guess when people told me that I would be having one of the best experiences of my life they truly meant it. I am so lucky to have been able to participate in the 2011 Foot Locker Cross Country Championships, not only because I had the privilege of racing 39 of the best high school athletes in the country, but because I made so many friendships that I know will last a lifetime!

Holy Trinity senior Daniel Moore remained unbeaten on the year breaking a course 10 year old course record at Great American set by Alan Webb.  Moore ran a sub fifteen, 14:57 to beat out nationally ranked Jacob Burcham of West Virginia in the final stretch of the race. Chiles senior Lily Williams also remained unbeaten and set a course record of her own. Williams busted out a 17:29 at the Jesse Owens Classic in Alabama to get the win and lead her team to a title as well.

Williams 17:29 CR, Chiles 18:37 Avg in Bama Jason Byrne Oct 2, 2011

Chiles made the long journey from Tallahassee to the Jesse Owens Classic in Oakville, Alabama. According to Google Maps, that's about smack dab in the middle of nowhere.  It's in the northern part of the state between Decatur and Moulton.

Chiles Quest For Number Four Won't Come Easy Todd Grasley Aug 31, 2011

The girls at Chiles High School have won the past three 3A Cross Country Championships. The quest for number four won't be as easy. If the Timberwolves want to be on top they will have to do it with one of the top duos in the state, seniors Carly Thomas and Lily Williams.

Belen Jesuit Leads Colonial, Estero as Top Returning Team Jason Byrne Aug 4, 2011

Belen Jesuit pack a punch this season! Four of their top five return with plenty of firepower to fill in the gap and then some. Elliot Clemente will lead the way (likely for the entire state) with his 15:03 season best from last year, pacing Belen to a 15:58 team average. Colonial and Estero ring in at a somewhat distant but certainly not insurmountable #2 and #3 position in our computer rankings.

Prestate: Chiles Girls Dominate, DP Boys 2 Points Over Columbus Jason Byrne Oct 17, 2009

Kathryn and Erika Fluehr go 1-2 yet again with times of 17:16 and 17:44 in the Elite Girls race.  Jana Stolting has the third fastest girls time on the day in 17:51 out of the small school race.  The highly anticipated battle in the boys race saw a great Jimmy Clark and Matt Mizereck battle it out.  Mizereck answered Clark's strong move and wins 15:20 to 15:23 up the final long incline.  Team-wise Chiles girls were well in front of Winter Park and Dr. Phillips once again beat out Columbus (by just 2 points) to prove they are top of the heap in the state.

NXN Southeast: Atkinson Wins Jason Byrne Nov 29, 2008

Brian Atkinson had a fantastic day to won the race in 15:11 by three seconds. Erika Fluehr is top Florida girls finisher in 10th place with 18:11. While no Florida teams advance, Brian Atkinson can move on to the national meet in Portland.  This is the first year NXN is accepting individuals as well was teams.

Tallahassee is a Distance Running Hotbed Bob Thomas Nov 14, 2008

There is a uniqueness to Tallahassee that separates it from the rest of the Florida when it comes to distance running. Couple an extraordinary network of running trails, an active and supportive community track club, a county-wide middle school cross country program more than 300-strong with a collection of the state’s most accomplished coaches and you have the blueprint for sustained success. You could make a compelling argument - without the benefit of lobbyists - that the Capital City is the state seat for high school cross country running, per capita, at least since 1997.

Showdown at the Ranch, Pre-State Meet is Tomorrow Jason Byrne Oct 17, 2008

This weekend a couple thousand of runners, including many of the best in the state of Florida, will be headed to an out-of-the way ranch in dimly populated North Pasco County.  Down the small dirt, wooden path they will venture, hoping their bus does not get stuck.  And then finally over the railroad tracks, the woods open up and they will see it:  the beautiful Little Everglades Ranch.  Some hate the course, some love it.  But there is no denying it is one of the most beautiful spaces of authentic Florida that you will find.  No tourists.  No urban sprawl.  Just a serene natural setting filled with the greenest grass, wetland ponds, blue herons and other water birds, along with a few hundred head of cattle! 2096 athletes and 80 schools are entered, coming from as far away as Key West and Fort Walton Beach.  Some of them are perennial powers.  Others are small but developing programs.  All coming together for this preview of the season culminating state championship meet just over a month from now. Here is your first look at the competition.

3A Girls Region Previews Jason Byrne Sep 2, 2008

Will it be Leon or Chiles in a tightly locked Region 1?  Can anyone touch a recharged Wharton in Region 2?  Who will fill the vacuum created by a depleted Seminole team in Region 3?  How will St. Thomas bounce back from Lauren Ross transfer?  Can Satellite 4-Peat at state?

North Florida Boys Preview Tyrone Gayle Aug 25, 2007

North Florida, as it has since the beginning of Y2K, will start with three perenial powers who each have three state titles in the seven years since the dawn of the decade:  in Tallahassee the Timberwolves of Chiles and the Marauders of Maclay and two and half hours east down I-10 in Jacksonville the “wait, I thought they graduated everybody” boys of Bishop Kenny.  Beyond those three Tallahassee and Jacksonville championship dynasties, Clay County's Bears of Bartram Trail will look to mix it up. And Flagler Palm Coast, which was marked as the only North Florida team mentioned on the NTN South Region poll, will also be vying for top honors.  FPC, itself an amazing dynasty, has two titles and two runner-ups since 2000.  Don’t get me wrong, there is a nice group of other teams to watch as well, but these five will be the cream of the crop in North Florida.
