Besides some heavy showers, the Park Vista Cobra Country XC Invitational was a great success. The invite was held at South County Regional Park which is where the traditional 5k Spanish River course is held. The race for people who don't know is a two loop course with a hill at the end and a nice straight finish.
John I. Leonard junior Ilio Sanchez likes his weeks jam packed, running two meets and training in between. The strain hasn't gotten to his legs as Sanchez continues to win area meets and place highly in others including the Cobra XC Invitational and Spanish River Invitaitonal. We caught up with him recently to see how he started in the sport, his favorite courses to run on, goals for 2014, and much more in this XC Spotlight!
Nease senior Karen Xiang and John I. Leonard sophomore Illio Sanchez are this week's Athlete of the Week winners. Xiang picked up her second win of the season at the Katie Caples Invitational. She beat a field of state champions including 1A's Julie Wollrath and 2A's Julia Montgomery in a time of 18:52.00, the second time she has gone under 19 minutes. Sanchez got his miles in this week racing in three meets and picking up three wins. Most impressive was a nine second victory Friday night at the Martin County Under the Lights meet, and then less than 12 hours later edging out Anthony Deleva by three tenths of a second to capture the title at the TKA Lions Invitational.
It was a great 2012-2013 in both cross country and track across the Sunshine state. Many of our seniors will soon be on their way to start their college careers both athletically and academically so we wanted to salute them one more time in this special feature.
Former John I. Leonard star Ryan Pickering is currently making an impact the University of Oregon. During his high school days Pickering won a state title in the 1600 meters as well as a 4A title in cross country. As a senior he advanced to Foot Locker Nationals in San Diego, where he finished 9th overall. We caught up with Pickering to find out what he has been up to and what advice he might have for high school runners.
It was a beautiful day for cross country in South Florida as Palm Beach'Countys best runners headed to South County Regional Park in Boca Raton for the County Championships. Six races took place on the afternoon inlcuding two middle school, two junior varsity, and the two varsity races. The course consisted of mostly flat surfaces, one loop around a lake, and the second lap moving runners closer to the finish line and over a slight hill in the process. John Calderon was on-site with over one thousand photos from the event!

The cross-country course at Okeeheelee Park long has been considered one of the toughest in Palm Beach County because of its hills and grassy, winding terrain. But Benjamin senior Meredith Anderson and John I. Leonard senior Anderson Charles negotiated the 5K layout in impressive fashion Tuesday at the John I. Leonard Invitational. The recruitment for John I. Leonard senior Ryan Pickering has come to an end. Tomorrow, the two time state champion will announce his decision to run for the University of Oregon. The camaraderie of the team and the potential to compete for national championship over his four year career is what sold Pickering on the Ducks.
