In a relatively cool afternoon race, Robinson's boys and King's girls came away with the trophy in the 3A-9 District Championship held at Brandon High School. Run on a slightly altered Don Bishop meet course, the two-loop course hosted tight competition in both the girl's and boy's races.
Around this time last year, King's Micaela Torres was going into districts feeling pretty confident. With a fourth-place finish at the Hillsborough County Championships the week prior and a PR of 19:29.45 set at Disney, Torres looked to the 3A District 9 meet as another shot to challenge Chamberlain's Maggie Parrish and cinch the district title.
The 2014 Run with the Bulls Invitational at Wiregrass Ranch High School resumed after a one-year hiatus on Saturday. The faces of the 2012 meet were nowhere to be found Saturday as a new host of victors took the stage. In 2012, the Land O'Lakes Gators dominated the boys. In 2014, it was Class 4A state champion in the 1600m and 3200m Plant senior Jack Guyton that stole the show. Guyton was flanked by familiar foes in the early going. Jack Rogers of Robinson and Noah Perkins of Seffner Christian both gave chase to Guyton early on.
Four Hillsborough Country programs kicked off their cross country seasons at the inaugural New Tampa Preseason meet at Pebble Creek Golf Course on Aug. 28. King won the girls team title with 35 points, slipping past Wharton by seven and Freedom by 12. Freedom took first for the boys with 23, besting Wharton by nine.
This year's Crusader Gallop 5k was once again held at Sydney Dover Trails. Always known as a tough course this year was no different. This year there were even more challenges to the course. There have been wild boar tear up a good bit of the starting field so runners had to maneuver through a narrow start. Runners this year had to navigate up a 150 meter long hill, once at the start and again just before the 2 mile mark. The back part of the course a 1k loop proved most difficult. After heavy rains most of the day Friday there were many parts of that section under water or just down right muddy. The course is hill, sandy in parts and uneven.
