South Florida Harriers will start the 2017 cross country season on Friday night at the Under The Lights/Twilight Kickoff hosted by Ferguson High School.
St. Thomas Aquinas junior Nicholas Rischar won his third race in a row and first regional title in his career at the 4A-4 championship in Miami with a time of 16:14.89, just shy of his personal best. The Raider boys won in dominating fashion with 26 points, a 36 second 1-5 split, and a team average of 16:41.00. Braddock edged out Ferguson for the runner-up spot by ONE point 101-102.
Over three dozen teams from South Florida will head to Miami AKA the 305 for the 305 Classic hosted by Coral Park High School at Larry & Penny Thompson Park. On the girls side, Gulliver Prep freshman Natalie Varela is the athlete to beat as she is coming off a FL#2 time of 17:46.52 at the flrunners.com Invitational. Fellow freshmen Valerie Lastra and Rahyah Andressohn as well as 8th grader Jinah Mickens-Malik are young and talented as well. On the boy's side Hunter Dobbs has the fastest time coming into the race and is hoping to propel the Cudas past Braddock for the team title.
Often times in post-season coverage, we tend to direct our focus towards the state’s top teams and talent while forgetting those mid-level teams to whom just a trip to the state meet is a huge accomplishment. In a new series called Last One In, we look at teams whose goal was to make it to the state meet, not place on the podium.
New Braddock Senior High School coach Alex Shaw decided to take his cross country runners to their own camp. Joining with fellow South Florida schools Coral Park, Miami Sunset, and Doral Academy, the team headed north for the 2015 Ocala Running Camp for a seven day trip. Shaw, shares the highlights of the camp both running and non running-related!
After nine years as the head coach at Miami Sunset, Alex Shaw is leaving to take over the program at Braddock High School. Shaw decided to leave after this graduating class.
