About Our Team
Cross Country (recent) History
In the late 1990s and early part of this century, the Citrus Boys Cross Country was consistantly in the top 10 of the state. Although they never won a team state title under then coach Bruce Nelson, Cory Presnick did win an individual state title in 1999. Coach Nelson retired after the 2004 season and local running expert Chris Moling coached the team to advance to Regionals in 2007. In 2008 Coach Nelson came out of retirement to take the reins of the boys team again. The 2008 team advanced to the Regional meet for a 2nd straight year. Although the team just missed advancing to states, Freshman Tim Wenger was an individual medalist at Regionals. 2009 saw Citrus move up to 3A, but the team advanced to Regionals for the 3rd straight year and Wenger as an individual to States for a second straight year. In 2010 James Martone took over as the coach of the Canes and Tim Wenger advanced to the State Meet for his third straight year. The Lady Canes were not as dominant of a program in the '90s, but did periodically make it to states. The beginning of this century saw several coaches and a small team. Billy Bass took over as coach in 2006 and in that year the Lady Canes returned to Regionals after a five year absence. They followed it up in 2007 and 2008. In 2008 they were a very close 7th place to just miss advancing to states, even through both Erin Wells and Brandi Nichols advanced as individuals with Erin setting the new school record with a 19:58 run. 2009 the Lady Hurricanes suffered a lot of injuries in their first year at 3A, but again advanced to Regionals for the 4th straight year. Brandi Nichols finished an incredible 4-year XC career by advancing to the State Meet as an individual. Brandi is now running for Nova Southeastern. In 2010 they just missed advancing out of an extremely deep district despite a team of a dozen girls that ran under 26:00s. In 2011 former CHS harrier Brian Lattin took over as the head coach.
