In His Own Words: Austin Droogsma

Gulf Breeze senior Austin Droogsma is one of our high school bloggers for the 2013 track season. Austin is the reigning 3A State Champion in both the shot put and discus and will be sharing his experiences throughout the year. We hope you enjoy his journey as well as the rest of our bloggers this season!

This past week was a really solid openening for me. We had our first meet last Tuesday against Navarre and Milton High School.I had a really great meet to open the season. I threw a 180 even in the discus and 52'5 in the shot put. I was really suprised that I opened with such good personal marks. My training is very important to me and I generally try to workout twice a day once in my school weightlifting class and then after school with the other throwers.

As a thrower you need strong hips a solid core and a strong back and shoulders so I try to isolate those muscles when I workout, like doing incline bench for shoulder work also seated dumbell press and deep squats for hip work and then various ab work. This is all going to help make a sound and strong thrower. As the week goes on I generally start to tone down my workouts until friday where I do very little as far as a workout, maybe a little abs, but nothing major because of the meet.

Last Saturday, the weather was bad and I didn't have that great of a day in discus with a 170'3,  but the shot suprised me and I was able to belt out a 55'5. I'm really excited after this first week to see wat the futre holds. It should be a pretty good season ahead.
