Future of Broward County Track - Girls Edition

Hi, I'm Denise Spann and I run track for Westminster Academy, previously a Boyd Anderson Cobra. I'm new to the FLRunners blogging scene, and for my first blog I want to talk about Broward County's Future High School Stars as the Broward County Middle School Track and Field Championships is going down Monday , April 29, 2013. I know what your thinking, why not thoroughly introduce myself, I mean as this is my first blog. Trust me you'll get to really know me in my next blog; but for now let's get to talking about Middle School Track and Field.

Monday some of the fastest Middle Schoolers go head to head to see who will have bragging rights in their events as well as a relays and as overall teams.  This meet has spawned some current High School phenoms such as Kali Davis-White and Daeshon Gordon of Boyd Anderson, Rachelle Alexander of American Heritage, Regine Williams of Hallandale High School, as well as some past High School greats, Shayla Sanders currently competing for University of Florida and Kyri Tabor currently competing for University of Alabama.

On Monday , the Middle Schoolers will have their opportunities to create some lasting memories ending their Middle School track season.  This year's athletes are very talented even on the 6th grade level. A couple 6th graders to watch are two from two different Middle Schools but familiar to each other due to past competition, Amaya Thomas of Lauderdale Lakes Middle School and Daishon Spann of Pompano Middle School.  Both these little ones have very impressive times in the 800m that would beat some high schoolers running now. Spann coming into the final with a close to record breaking time of 2:27 and Thomas with a 2nd leading time of 2:36, both these young ladies will be apart from the field and it is hard to believe they are only in 6th grade.  Other events they will compete in are 4x400m Relay both Pompano and Lauderdale Lakes have qualified and Spann will also compete in the open 200m.

Of course the 100m final will be a race not to miss as returning to defend her title Camryn Cross, 8th grader from Parkway Middle will not have it easy this time around. Also, returning to defend their title is Cadebra Calcote, 8th grader from William Dandy Middle in the 400m, she hasn't run the impressive :58 that she won with last year, but none the less she is the favorite in this race.  Not to leave out any 7th or 8th graders, here are a couple other young ladies to watch:

Shanna Francis (7th) - 100m
Ariyan Herring (8th) - 100m, 200m
Nikyia Woolen - 1600m
Carshaylah Harrison (7th) - High Jump, 400m
Sophia Gustley (8th) - Discus
Taylor Smith (8th) - 100m, 200m, 400m
Alex Barbosa (8th) - 1600m
Devin D'Oliveria - 100m, Long Jump
Essence Cooper - 100m
Dyandra Antoine - 100m Hurdles
Miranda Kopecki - 1600m
Juwana Edwards - 800m
Dynah James - 200m

These are just the standouts from the Regional Qualifiers, I am sure there will be those that will make their mark as well.

I can guarantee there will be some good races in all three relays, 4x100m, 4x200m, 4x400m and as far as the  overall team to win this meet, I am torn between William Dandy and Lauderdale Lakes. This is going to be a very good meet and a great chance for these Middle Schoolers to show what they have on the track. One thing I can say is that these ladies will be a great representation of Broward County High School in the future to come.  Look for my next Blog to talk about the Middle School fellas and how they will fair going into this meet as well.  Let me know your feedback and how you liked this blog.
