In Her Own Words: Kendall Ellis

Hey everyone, Kendall Ellis here again. First off, congratulations to those who competed in the 1A and 2A State meets already. I’m especially proud of my friends Deja Parrish and Diamond Spaulding for their first state championships in the 400 and 200, respectively. Anyways, last week STA had regionals aka state qualifiers. The meet had some ups and downs, but ultimately both the girls and boys came out on top. There were some amazing races, along with some season PR’s, including myself in the 400 with a time of 53.80. Hopefully the results of the regional meet are a preview of what’s to come at the state meet this weekend, and both the STA girls and boys are able to reign as champions together again.

This weekend was another chance for prime time bonding since it was my coach’s not so optional FLYTAF meet. The majority of the team was out there volunteering and supporting the youth. It’s kind of funny to see these kids running now since I was in the same position just a few years ago. It never fails; there’s at least one kid whose face is covered in tears, not after the race, but before. I must say I 100% feel their pain, I want to cry walking up to the line too. As if that wasn't fun enough, the girls team had a sleepover and we all went to church together the next day. It was nice just to get together and do something as a unit before the big state meet.

Speaking of states, Saturday is when it all goes down. Like Coach Armenteros says, “Somebody’s about to get this work”. The team has been training hard all season and it’s about time to put on a show, bring out the big guns, and every other cliche phrase you can think of. I’m excited to see what the team is going to do and have all our hard work fall into place. I won’t get sappy about the season coming to a close just yet, but it really is kind of hard to believe that the high school season is actually coming to an end. After all the months of training and time spent after school for practice, now I get to go home right when the bell rings at 2:30? It happens every year, but it’ll still take some getting used to. Ultimately, I’m looking forward to states with the team this weekend as well as other summer meets coming up.

As always, I truly wish everyone the best of luck in their upcoming meets, whether it be states or not, and remind you all to go for the gold!
