Carrollton has always been known as a team who flies under the radar. In 2011 they were ranked 5th in the 2A State Championship meet. To everyone’s surprise they captured their first state championship. Last year, they started off strong, ranked 4th in the state and proved to be a top competitor with a strong set of new girls. As the year went on, the core of their team became less stable due to the injury of their top runner Maria Balcazar and the lack of top performance from several other preconceived expectations from the top five runners.
This year they return all runners with several new additions. There is a very strong core of five girls, four of them being last year’s 4x800 regional team (Niki Kolisch, Marivi Madiedo, Sofia Miguez, and Andrea Zumpano). Jessica Kuhn and Charlotte Griffin are showing to be two additions to Carrollton’s top seven with endless amounts of potential to be amongst the top runners in the state of Florida.
Carrollton is ranked 5th for the 2013 2A State Championship meet. Whether they will meet this expectation or exceed it is hard to tell at this point as they are a team known for coming out of the blue. If they will again be the talk of the year with a “shocking win” is entirely in the hands of the girls and the attitude they approach the season with – It is definitely a possibility which other Florida 2A girl’s teams fear. A team to keep your eyes on.“Champions are made when no one is watching.”
