Edwards, Bennett Golden For Green Wave, Estero Locks Down Team Trophies At LCAC

On-Site Coverage

The girls kicked off the meet at 4:30 with the blazing Florida sun beating down on them. Fort Myers senior Emily Edwards finished second just three days prior at Pre-State and was once again on a mission. She started the race in front and finished that way. Edwards crossed the line in 19:32.00, 18 seconds faster than runner-up Araceli Leon of Estero. It was Edward's second win on the course this season after winning the 3D Invitational August 31st to start her season. Estero once again proved why they are the top team in the area, 3A, and possibly the state with a very impressive team score of 22 points. The Wildcats top five finished 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 6th, and 7th. Fort Myers was second with 57 points.

Much like Edwards, Tyler Bennett on the boys side, came into the LCAC Championships with a fine showing at Pre-State. Bennett like Edwards, was also the defending champion of this meet. He too decided to take the lead early and never look back. A giant hill welcomes runners in the first 200 meters, but Bennett decided to throttle back at that point and save his energy for the way down.  By the mile the positions were set and the senior had a lead over his teammate Dean McGregor and the Estero duo of Dillion Vallette and Adam Sommer. Bennett crossed the line in 16:48, while the other three followed in that order. All were under 18 minutes. After losing by over 100 points to Fort Myers at Pre-State came back to get a close win. Both teams took it down to the wire. Fort Myers had three of the top five runners, but it was Estero coming out on top 32-37, with their number seven runner coming in before the Green Wave's number four.
